240 Exhaust Hole (with pic) 200 1990

While driving down the road I heard a loud thump, and a 'bolt' go flying the other way. Now I have a hole, and a loud exhaust!

I couldn't find anything in the repair manual, or the FAQ, about what use to be in the hole. Was it just a bolt? Can I simply cover/repair the hole?

Thanks!

    Test Port! 200 1990

There's a test port on that side of the head pipe. I dunno what size/thread it is, but it's definitely not an O2 sensor size.

Is it still threaded there?... or did the whole port blow out?

Is the heat shield loose and rattly?

Shouldn't be enough pressure in there to go popping things out. Could the cat be clogged?

A hole in the wall exhaust shop may be able to patch things up.

      Test Port! 200 1990

The heat shield is fairly loose, I can grab it and turn and slide it some. The threads in the hole are gone...I didn't hear any rattling really, but is there a way to test for a clogged cat?

Can I get the hole permantaly covered in a muffler shop? Or is it a crital test that I should try and get it re-tapped?

      Thanks for the help!

        Test Port! 200 1990

I can't really tell by the picture, but if that is visible from the outside nearest the pipe, it is the test port. But the hole looks too big, like the bung was blown right out of the pipe. If not, you can try checking the local auto parts stores for the Dorman display rack of drain plugs, etc. The test port is shown on the header pipes in the photos of this thread:

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

    240 Exhaust Hole (with pic) 200 1990

    Hi,

The same thing happened to me in my 93! It is like there was 2 possible spots for an 02 sensor although i don't think the threads are the right size for a stock sensor. I have been meaning to get a correct size bolt ond cut it short and install it, but for now I just have something close held in with a hose clamp. A muffler shop could probably fix it for a very small charge.

I think that my Oxygen Sensor is located closer to the manifold? Plus, I don't see any dangling connection renaming...

late 240 o2 sensor is pretty much right before the cat.

"I'll go with O2 sensor for $106.22, Alex". Be sure your threads are in good enough shape to hold whatever replacement item you install in the hole. Please don't ask how I know this :).

Does my car have two O2 sensors?

I felt an O2 sensor in place, above the catalytic converter, but below the hole, and on the opposite side of the hole.

                Ha! Perfect.

Maybe it was the factory hole for an O2 sensor, but someone flipped the pipe around and installed the O2 sensor on the other side?

Does anyone have the hole on their 240? It's on the passenger side.

I had an 82 240 that had two holes - an O2 sensor in one and a threaded plug in the other. I'm not sure why it had an extra hole, but I remember connecting a pressure guage to it once when I suspected an increase in exhaust back pressure.
