1990 Volvo low beam headlights are both out!!! 700 1990

Both of my low beam headlights broke at the same time. The high beam headlights work when selected. So I'm thinking electrical, not a blown bulb. Removed bulbs they look fine. Checked out fuses they are fine #19 and #20 15 amp. When I select headlights, the instrument cluster works, sidemarker and rear tail lights all work, but no headlights. I called the volvo dealership for a relay and they gave me a 5 prong headlight relay marked K. I do not have fog lights or rear fog lights. The only other thing is the actual switch but how does everthing else work. rrrrr... Any help would be grealty appreciated.

It is true that both bulbs can fail at once, but I vote for the bulb out sensor.

I think it is the gray wires - one wire in - two wires out. I soldered mine together to bypass the sensor because a new sensor is quite expensive.

I've seen bulbs burn out at the same time on numerous occasions. Have you tested for voltage at the bulb sockets?

You can solder your bulb out sensor.
It is in series with the low beams and sounds like it went "Open"
There's plenty of stuff in the FAQs and "search" to explain it.

Good luck, Bill

Bill,

Thanks for your help, one question for you? I was reading the faq stuff and it looks like the bulb out sensor controls other stuff, tail lights and cruise control, which I dont have. Doesnt the bulb out sensor control more lights than just the headlights, so I'm thinking more bulbs would not work. I will re-check all of my other lights. Additionally I could only find information for a volkswagen bulb out sensor, any additional information to solder this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jesse

The bulb sensor has legs in series with the low beams, & brake lights
They are separate circuits. Do "Bulb out sensor" in the Brick search
and you will find everything. Or just yank the bulb out sensor and solder
the open leads and get it over with. Its the big red thingy at the left rear of the fuse block in back of the ashtray. About the size of a beer can cut in half.
You can carefully pry it out and get a small screwdriver and pop the cover off for repairs.

What happens is high current flow heats up the cruddy little solder joints and they go open killing in your case the low beams. If the bulb out idiot light didn't come on, see if it shows when first starting- maybe the dash idiot light is toast too.
