Swapping steering wheels ... bowtie to early style ... help 120-130 1968

My '68 currently has the correct bow-tie style steering wheel on it, but i would like to switch to the earlier style (1959-1967, retro-looking).

The only parts I have for the retro looking streering wheel is the clack wheel itself and the chrome horn ring.

What other parts will I need to do the swap? From what i can tell from my parts manual, I need a couple of lock washers and the scews to mount the horn ring?

Has anyone ever tried this? Any hints or tips?

Thanks in advance!

Swapping steering wheels ... bowtie to early style ... help 120-130 1968

I took my wheel off last weekend and got stumped. I don't know where to hook up the horn wire to the early style wheel. I took some pics...

Here's the early style wheel I have...

Here's my existing bowtie wheel with the horn removed...

You can see the mounting nut and the horn wire.

And here's my existing bowtie horn...

You can see in this picture where the horn wire attaches.

What am I missing to make the early style wheel work?

    Thanks,
    Stumped 122 Owner

Can anyone offer some advice as to why the chrome mounting base doesn't fit inside the center of the steering wheel? Please see the attached picture ... or view it here http://www.brickboard.com/GALLERY/volvopic.htm?js_link=&id=9110

Am I missing any parts that won't become available after I remove my bow tie steering wheel?

You need to remove the two screws that are in the back of the horn ring. I'm guessing you may have over looked those. They are clearly visible in your photo, installed in the horn ring.

Remove the screws and it should fit just dandy.

I have removed those 2 screws when trying to fit the horn ring to the wheel, but for some reason, the mouning pate doesn't fit inside the center of the wheel. I think I'm going to grind down the top & bottom edges of the plate so it will fit inside and rest on the tabs on the top and bottom.

I've got a couple extra old style steering wheels, if you're interested in one email me through the BB. They are in vavious condition, will have a look while I'm in the garage tomorrow.

I like the bowtie wheels better so would have no problem parting with one.

+1 for second in line if you'd like to swap steering wheels. PM if the first in line doesn't work out.

The splines are the same, so you should be able to swap with out issue. Yes, you will need a couple of small screws to hold the horn ring on the wheel proper but other than that, you should be fine with the large nut and tabbed washer that came off when you pulled the bow-tie style one.

If you need the tabbed washer, I think I have a few NOS ones around.
