ECU suitability '88 B230FT 700 1988

I couldn't resist grabbing a brand-new ECU at my dealer's "Garage Sale" last year. The price was right, the sticker said "1985-89 B230FT, and I'd been reading a lot about the fickle nature of this component. I decided recently to take a closer look at the article - just in case - my 1988 765 Turbo is running just fine, BTW, after the engine replacement (whole 'nother story), and I find that the number on the factory sticker doesn't seem to come up in anything that I've read on the subject, here or elsewhere, save a brief reference in a fuel injection paper from Volvo UK. The number doesn't even appear in Zachary Zaletel's excellent document, referenced in dino's message in an earlier thread on ECU replacement. Here's all the info on the unit - can anyone give me hope that it'll work in my machine, or should it go back on the shelf. I haven't pulled the kick panel off yet to determine exactly which series is keeping my wagon on the road at present. All I do know is that it's the same one from before the engine change.
The unit is labelled "Jetronic", made in Spain by BOSCH, series # 0 280 000 591. Another number on this label is 3 531 107. The shelf/dealer's label reads FCU 5003765 1985-89 B230FT. The parts man, whom I've dealt with for 20+ years, assured me that this was the unit for my vehicle. It's just the "591" that's got me wondering. Any comments?
Thanks,
Garth.

Hey, great, that dealer guy really knows his stuff. Except, apparently, ECUs. The 591 is for normally aspirated LH 2.4. Works fine in the EGR equivalent, but no EGR function.

Thanks for the info, Robert. I'm disappointed in my parts man - he's usually right on track. I suspect that someone else mis-labelled this item for some reason or other - it happens. Do you have a source code (reference) for this particular ECU application? I'd like to have some paperwork to show the folks at the dealership, as an adjustment should be in order, I think.
      Regards,
      Garth

Unfortunately my information is based on my own studies in the salvage yards over the last 10 years. Most tables and sources are error filled I find.

Well, Robert, thanks for your honesty in the matter. I'm not quite ready to chuck my growing piles of manuals and other reference materials as yet, so I'll go on looking. I'm quickly being driven to check the number of the ECU currently in my vehicle, especially in view of the following notes, found on another Volvo forum; what's your take on this?:

          "LH2.2

          740 Saloon (744) - 2.3 Turbo 08.86-07.89 156HP B230FT
          740 Estate (745) - 2.3 Turbo 08.86-07.89 156HP B230FT
          760 Saloon (704, 764) - 2.3 Turbo 01.88-07.89 162HP B230FT

          LH2.2 (Fuel ECU):

          0 280 000 541
          (Volvo p/n: 1367487)

          0 280 000 591
          0 986 261 759
          (Volvo p/n: 3531107, 5003765)"

          "For LH2.2:

The 541 and 591 ECU are the same but with two differences. The 591 has newer (better) components that makes it more durable and stable. The 591 also has a removable chip. Other than that the 541 and 591 doesn´t differ in function or driveability. With the mod-kit that is included in the 541 chip package the 541 becomes a 591."

Actually, I'm finding more info on this topic as I go, and of particular interest is the stuff on chipping, which is of no interest to me, Except that the writers are especially precise in their references to the specific ECUs involved.

I'll close this thread soon with an update on what's currently working for me. If it seems appropriate, perhaps I'll swap the new unit in, just to see if it'll allow the machine to start and run.

          Regards,

          Garth.

I just remembered - this vehicle was sold in Canada - I don't know if that makes any difference to the specs - and I've owned it since new.
