Changed U joints now steering wheel is off center 700 1992

I have a 1992 740 turbo wagon. I found a steering coupler on a low mileage 1993 960 and installed it on my car. The parts look the same. I put it togeather and took it for a driver, but the steering wheel is now off center to the left. It seems like the linkage would only go on one of two ways becasue it is slotted. So, what gives? How do I fix it? Thanks.

I just did this on one of our cars. The splines from steering rack to lower u-joint are not indexed in any way. The top of the lower u-joint assembles only one way.

Get the front wheels pointed straight ahead, and undo the steering u-joint, and re-connect with the steering wheel centered.

Take off the steering wheel & put it back straight.

No, I don't want to do that, it's an airbag car.

You can get some adjustment by moving the tierods. I don't know how much but perhaps enough.

Just turn each one an equal amount after loosening the locknuts. Pay attention to what is going on with the direction you turn each one. If you turn one and it moves that wheel to the "outside" then make sure you turn the other one in a direction that will turn it to the "inside". This will keep your toe in adjustment as it was originally.

When you get done moving both the wheels will be turned somewhat and if you have done it the correct amount the wheel will be in the correct position when you straighten the wheels.
