Original tire size for 56 444? 444-544 1956

I'm a few steps away from having the 56 on the road! It is in need of new tires. The tires on it now are 185/65/r15s, but I don't know if that is the original size? Does anyone know?
Thanks!

    Hi Jake

I have a set of 165sr15 mounted on early rims (incorrect for 56- ~'66 122 style) that you can throw on there if you like. They are 1/2 worn or so. Rims aren't great (slight warpage), but if you're on a budget...

Had them on my Amazon for years.

165R15 was the appropriate radial replacement.
The 185s you have are probably pretty good.

I find documentation (Road & Track road test) that the '57 444 came to the US on 5.90-15 tires, and I can't imagine the '56 being different. I also see the same size listed in my 444/544 "Green Book" tire & wheel supplement page. The green book supplement does say that at some point ("late production" 544's - prolly '64 or so?) came on 6.00-15 tires.

And in case you haven't already figured it out, both sizes mentioned above were bias-ply tires, not radials... those did not appear on a Volvo as standard equipment until the P1800 was introduced with 165-15's (Pirelli Cinturato's) in 1961.
