How is water getting into my tail light? Replace foam gasket? 200 1986

1986 244 w/ 80k.

After rain or snow thaws, I get about an inch of water in my taillight housings, and some water in my truck/wheel weels - just when the car is sitting. There is no rust holes in this area. Could replacing the foam tail light gaskets be the trick? Any other ideas?

Thanks

Paul, if you find no joy by replacing the gaskets, you will have cracks in your lenses, or invisibly, the welds between them and the black plastic housing.

You will see the gaskets don't keep water out of the lenses, although they may be responsible for a leak into the trunk. The water leaking into the lenses through a crack will fill the lens until it reaches the level of the light bulb and then out the back into the trunk.

A small drilled hole is how most of us deal with that until or if we can afford new tail light assemblies. Until one of us figures out how to flow sealant into the area where these cracks occur, the tail light replacement business will remain strong. Don't let me dim your hopes to fix this with a 39-cent piece of foam; yours might be the exception.

Yes, foam gaskets if available might help out. I believe I have also seen 1/16th" inch dia. holes drilled in the corners of the lamps to let the water out.

weep holes will help the lights but water in the trunk? I'd get in the trunk with a flashlight and have someone hose down the car. Especially check the top of the trunk under the rear windshield, there is a channel there that can rust out.
