Had a small stone chip that quickly developed into a crack in this cold weather.
About how much will it cost to replace? Where?

Thanks for the input.
I got quoted about $280. Your posts suggested I look elsewhere. I seem to have found someone who will do it for about $200. Yep, lots of leeway in installation costs.
I had to state I wanted the newer '91 to 93 style, because it wasn't shown as an option. They then checked and confirmed sizes were same.
Will make the appointment Monday.
Yes, if it were warm, I'd pull a used windshield and install it myself. I've done it before. Too cold for that. Plus, would the polyurethane set outdoors?

Be sure and tell the them to be careful not to plug the two drain holes in the bottom corners, other than that seal it up tight.
good luck

When you replace the windshield, by all means have the later style window / seal put in the car.
It seals much better and cuts down on wind noise a great deal. I think it looks better too.

Just as an aside, I had great luck with the "late style" window kit when I had a new windshield installed on my '85. The late model surround is noticeably quieter at 62 mph (100kph) than the old style, and I heartily recommend it.

If money is an issue, get the glass at a pick-and-pull and have it installed at a glass shop. I haven't done this in a while, but last time I did the glass was $50 (it appeared to have been recently replaced in the junk car) and I remember paying $30 to have someone install it.
Good luck!

I replaced my 240 windshield 6 months ago in Brantford. I used an independent windshield shop (Grants). $236 installed. Their supplier had it in stock. 1 day wait and half day work. Did have some corrosion issues under the windshield that they charged me $50 extra to fix up. I was happy to see again.

If you have comprehensive insurance and go to one of the big chains, they will get you a deal. If you have a used replacement, I have heard about small local installers who will come and do the job in your driveway for a couple hundred bucks. I'm not sure how that would work today at -15 though.

A few years back I looked at our policy, and thought it pretty dumb I was still carrying collision and comprehensive on a couple of 240's the insurance carrier would have totaled for less than the deductible. Of course, on windshield damage, they waive the deductible, because they want you to get it fixed. Net result, between potential claims-driven premium increases and the premiums themselves, the agent admitted there was no sense in continuing collision and comprehensive on old cars.

Kind of interesting that a Crack along the Viewing area is an inspection violation and the Insurance company will pay While a windshield that is so sandblasted that you cannot see out of it is OK.

Agreed, Tony, it's more than a little illogical, except that a crack in front of the driver's eyes takes the judgment factor out of it for the ins. co.
Otherwise, how sandblasted is "too" sandblasted? Those guys get paid/bonused for reducing or denying claims, not paying them. It has to be pretty much a black-and-white case for them to authorize repairs.
I replaced the S90 'shield and got the cash discount at a good shop recently. Great to see clearly again, but now I'm paranoid about winter gravel on our roads.

I can appreciate the "BLACK and White" decision making . And I hate it but I understand that profit is the name of the Insurance game (like they are really going broke).
Funny about being paranoid. I have had cracked windshields where I try to convince the Inspection guy that 'I swear I will replace AFTER the winter is over'.
It is nice to see again after getting the old one switched out, no doubt

I've never tried to "cash in" but that does seem self-defeating.

True enough, I haven't had comprehensive coverage for years. It seems to me the last time I had a windshield replaced at a big chain I was amazed at the wiggle room in pricing - like they were picking a number out of a hat. I tried pricing the part from a parts supplier and it was in the $1200 range, but somehow Speedy managed to eat my deductable and install the windshield for $450 or so - where's the profit!

Glass coverage in Alberta is horrendously expensive ... but before bringing my S10 back to Nova Scotia I replaced the typical Alberta cracked windshield with a tinted version from a local place in Slave Lake .... came to a total of CDN$313 and that is probably one of the most expensive places in the country to get anything done. Maybe Fort McMurray might be a bit more expensive.....

Wow! There might be more competition down here. Glass shops advertise. The only 240 windshield I've replaced cost US$200 even, 9 years ago. So my knowledge on this subject is scant, from the wrong country, and way out of date.

OK, I'm remembering a bit more now - it was not on a 240 by the way, I think it was a minivan and the key point was that Speedy ate my $500 deductable (I had comprehensive at the time). I just couldn't believe they had enough profit margin to do that.

And I too am remembering some. The quote in round numbers had the feel of "let's make a deal." You're right, the profit margin must include a commission dependent on a decision-maker having insurance coverage. We see the same thing with health care in the states. Not trying to wax political, just factual.

Two hundred dollars for a hour or two at the most.
And you have to provide the glass. I could understand
if they were providing the glass....come on.
I've never heard of such a rip off....unless you
take your car to a dealership for repairs.

That's the cost of living in Canada and USA. I paid to replace my windshield, brand new with upper dark tint and modern style seal for the sum of $168.00 tax included, yes, in Puerto Rico. Price has not changed in less than 10 years.

|
|
I had one replaced about 8 years ago. I got a free safety inspection with the windshield. $150. Now I'm getting a bit worried with these numbers over $200. Maybe I'll take the windshield out of the 86 when I part it out.
