Just had that happen to my 1993 945. Ordered the bypass plate from IPD and installed it this past weekend, as i do not tow with my car and seriously doubt I will have any need of the overdrive lockout function. Also replaced the transmission mount while I was there (ordered it from Tasca).

It is an awkward and messy job, as the solenoid is way up on the drivers side of the transmission. Clean the area VERY thoroughly. I used 4 cans of brake cleaner and an old toothbrush.
It is much easier if you support the tranny with a jack (and a wide piece of wood to distribute the stress on that Aluminum pan), then remove the cross-member and gently lower the transmission A BIT. Just an inch makes a big difference.
Disconnect the wiring connector near the rear of the tranny, then work the wire out of the various clips--get the wiring free FIRST, because there is a ton of grit and nasty stuff caked to it and lurking inside the clips!)
The solenoid is attached with two 12mm bolts. They are a *&$% to get to, but I had good luck with a 12-point 12mm wrench and also with a small 1/4" drive ratchet and a very short extension. Remove the solenoid, remove the two little rubber gaskets (make sure your hands are dirt-free!), then put the plate on, get the two bolts started (I had a hell of a time getting the rear one going), then tighten them down. The directions from IPD are reasonably helpful.
Car shifts great through all 4 gears. The upshift into OD is now FAR smoother than it has been in the 2 years I've owned the car. Wow.
