240 GLT ebay quandry 200

I have a nice '71 144, but am getting greedy and seeking out a 240 wagon to buy. There's one on ebay that I'm considering, which has the 2.3 motor, an auto trans, and the two extra pop-up seats in the back. It looks tidy, but the lambda sond light is on, and it idles a little rough when the engine is cold. The airflow mass sensor was replaced 6 months ago, which fixed the problem last time the dash light came on. Should I be worried about bidding on the car? I assume that the catalyser could possibly be at fault, and is prohibitively expensive to replace -- however it can legally be run without it.

The Lambda light simply comes on after so many miles, basically suggesting you replace the O2 sensor.

Nothing really is prohibitively expensive on a 240.

I'd say go ahead and bid on it, but lowball it to the point where if you get it, and have to put another $900.00 into it to get it running right, that you are still okay. I'll bet some others here will chime in with costs associated with cats and sensors, etc.

A rough idle problem could be as simple as a tune up issue. I had a rough idle on cold start-ups recently and went all through my 92 thinking I had a MAF problem, but it turned out to be that the ignition wires had lived a full life and simply needed replacing. That worked in my case. Spray a little water on the wires after it's running normal and see if you can re-create the problem.
