Auto to Stick? 200 1987

Has anyone converted an automatic 244 to a stick? I like the auto but i think it would be more fun with a stick. Im a student so I have all summer to do this so times not really an issue but how complicated is it and how much would it cost? Any advice would be great.

With an '87 you're in luck - as you don't ahve to track down the mildly rare and very heavy dog-dish flywheel with the 58 holes for the LH 2.4 crank position sensor. You can get donor parts from earlier cars, when manuals were more common.

You mostly need a nice complete set of parts from a donor car.

Clutch pedal, brake pedal, and bracket. And cable.

Bellhousing, flywheel, pressure plate, clutch dist, pilot shaft bearing and clip.

Transmission, shifter (700-series transmissions have a shifter that extends further back - you need a 240 trans).

The front section of the driveshaft (again, not compatible with 700 series parts).

Again, you're in a bit of luck with an '87 as you don't have to worry about a speedometer cable, although you may need to find a way to seal off a speedometer drive if you use an older M46, but I'd suggest finding a later M47 (true 5 speed - no OD, weighs a lot less) that doesn't have one anyway.

When I did the swap, it was a couple of hours to put in the pedals, and a leisurely shade-tree mechanic 6 hour day putting the trans in underneath.

I do not know what part of the world you are from, but here in Sacramento, CA there is a guy who offered these conversions via craigslist. I would guess he is a member of this board... I have M46+OD on my 86 240GL but I was contemplating about getting M47 when it will be time to change clutch.. I wonder how easy is that.. Good luck and please post on how your project develops!

This subject has covered in depth here in BB over the years. Suffice to say, it's a fairly popular conversion, but it requires a complete set of parts from a donor car, a decent level of experience, and some patience.

Use the Search function to research all the posts - it's well documented.
