blower motor 900

I have a 94 940 with 200k miles....blower stopped (no heat and defrost)....pulled it out and it started running again...seems okay at all five speeds...but output might be weak. Running plenty fast it seems, but the output out of the all the vents seems to be weak...defrost, dash, floor......seems like air movement is a little lacking.

Right now it's hanging out of the dash in the footwell, and connected, and I can get it to go through all the speeds but sometimes it starts turning on it's own and sometimes I need to start it by turning it. Almost like the armature isn't lined up to start and needs to be oriented properly.

Is it shot?

Dear Hovonogila,

May this find you well. I think the motor is failing. Most likely, the carbon brushes - which which bring power to the armature - . are down to the minimum length.

As a result, one or both brushes does/do not make full contact with the armature. The motor cannot produce full power. If the armature stops turning, at a point where the brushes are not in contact, the armature will not move, until you push it to a point, where the brushes are in contact. That is why you sometimes can get it to run, by hand-turning the fan. Alternatively the armature may be worn-out.

While you might be able to fit new brushes to it - they're carbon, and can be re-shaped using sandpaper, if an exact replacement is not available - sometimes brushes are mounted, such that they cannot be replaced, without destroying the mounting. In that event, you simply have to toss the motor. The reason: when brushes are not meant to be replaced, the motor maker - even if still in business - usually will not sell brushes or the mounting.

I'd not waste time with it, but simply get a replacement.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thank you spook....I took your advice and changed it out with my NEW parts car blower motor.

Unfortunately the AT&T service truck took a left turn and cut off junior on his way home from school...and Esteban....nome de guerre for our now NEW parts car previous 940 with 365k miles...gave his life to save my eldest child. I picked up another 940 the same week, with fewer miles, and of Canadian assembly.

I tested the replacement motor on the harness to make sure before I mounted it in the car. The old motor turned pretty fast...but this one...was more like a high powered Everglades fan boat when the power was connected.

I had just done the head on the old Esteban before it got hit. It still purrs like a kitten but the body damage is too severe to drive. The front right got clipped in the collision.

Spook...thanks for your help and your incredible wit and verbal skills....and your advice is spot-on.

Deear hovonogila,

May this find you Well. Lament not the car: they feel no pain and its loss is your gain. Spook's Rule No. 41:
(a) it is hard to get spare parts
(b) it is hard to find persons, competent to install spare pares
(c) spare parts rarely work as well, as do original parts
(d) for some parts, there are NO spare parts
(e) take good care, of the parts you were issued.

By providing your son with a 940, you did in accordance with Rule 41. I hope he appreciates you, in all the dimensions of the word "appreciate".

Yours faithfully,

Spook
