940 Limited Slip 900

Can anyone tell me if all 940 turbos were equiped with limited slip? I have found conflicting spec documents on the internet so I don't know what to believe. Some sites also say that the turbo cars have 3.73 gears and some say they have a 4 to 1 Ratio. I don't own one yet but want to buy one to do a Mustang 5L engine transplant so it would be nice to have a definate model in mind. Thanks.

Most (all?) 940Ts have an Eaton G80 locker with a 3.73 ratio.
with modifications, it's entirely acceptable, but there's no way it's strong enough for a 5.0.

Well I guess I should have known that before I converted about 6 or 7 Volvos to 5L! I had a 240 GT with a 30 HP 5L which I drove for about six years and even had it at the strip a couple of times with no problem. Volvos use Dana 30s which are very strong and are also used in Jeeps.

OOPs, obviously that should have read 300 HP, my fingers are too big for my keyboard.

I have a G80 with 3.31 ratio from a 1992 965 in my 1988 744T with a 5.0 liter Ford and T5. It doesn't get driven much, but when it is driven it has been run hard. The G80 is still holding up just fine.

John
did you have to do any modifications to make the 1041 rear axle fit in your 740, did your car have abs and what did you have to do to get the speedo to work
also how about the braking system calipers, rotors, e brake all the same?
Thanks for the help Stephan

The 1041 bolts in. It is a direct replacement. Early and late e-brake cables and hardware are different, nothing to do with the 1041 versus 1031. The brakes interchange, but caliper piston sizes vary according to application.

Yes my car has ABS, as did the 1041 rear end from the 940. Early ABS is 96 tooth tone ring while late ABS is 48 tooth tone ring, and you must get an electronic speedometer signal converter.

The locker works great in spite of its maligned reputation.

John,
I have another question, I have a 1990 740 wagon with ABS, does this car have the same size or same 96 tooth tone ring as the 93-94 960? If so, then the speedo and ABS should work without modification of the pick-up signal???

1987-88 700s with ABS have 96 tooth tone ring. 1989+ 700/900 have 48 tooth tone rings. Everything will work.

I have the OE 3.31 axle (Turbo, M46) in my 1989 745 with 5.7 Chev LT1 and BW T-56 trans. No sign of diff problems yet and it has had its share of exuberant starts, shifts, etc. Local race shop that did some chassis work for me said there should be no worries about diff strength with street tires.

None of them were fitted with a true limited slip diff, certain models were fitted with a locker. This is a pawl type device that locks the diff at low speed and disengages (from memory) above 20 mph.

It's mildly useful when towing a trailer out of a muddy field, but it isn't in my view particularly desirable to have.

I beleive that locker thingy would have to be an after market install, I have never heard of a factory locker in a Volvo. From the recent research I've done, most 940 Turbos came with a limited slip diff.

All North American Market 940 turbo cars came with the 1041 locking rear end. It is an Eaton G80 locker. When one wheel spins faster (I can't tell you how much faster), the differential locks up at speeds less then 25 mph. It works well and is trouble free. The 1991-92 740Ts also had it.

Non-turbp 900's also have the 1041 w/locker... 900

...At least the '92 and '93 family rex/regina 940s.

The original post was about turbo cars, but I think all North American Market normally aspirated 1992+ 940s had the 1041. The 1041 could have been dropped in thge NA cars in 1995, when Volvo went cheap on the 940 series.

I believe that most non-turbo 940s have the locker diff. If it still has the sticker on it, it is identified as 1041. My understanding is that they will lock if one wheel turns too much more than the other if the speed is below 20mph. Then, once locked it will remain locked as long as you keep your foot in it. If you back off, it will unlock. I have no idea what it in a turbo and I have no idea how strong it is. I think you can find more info about it in the FAQs.
