transmission oil leak 200

I think I found the source of my leak(see earlier posts). I put 3 quarts of transmission fluid in and started my 92 Volvo to see if cleaning the flame trap and nipples helped my leaks. I jacked my car up because fluid was again dripping at a fairly high rate. It is still dark in color and is coming out of a square pan behind the oil pan. It is coming out inbetween where the bottom and top meet on the side. It appears to be a gasket failure. What do you guys think? Is this an easy fix?

I think you are the best one to judge how easy it is for you. Normally a new gasket is not a huge challenge. I would try a gentle tightening of the bolts first.

You're right. The bolts were loose. I changed the gasket and discovered it was not the problem. It is the transmission cooler line the has rotted. Helps if you can get under the car to begin with.

Well, good news and bad news, eh? At least now you know where your problem lies, and that's a good start. Go nice and easy on getting the threads restarted on the lines, and please don't ask me how I know this. :)

got it down and everything is fine now with the leak, however, we had a hard rain all night and today and the car will not start. On to the next problem.

Easy but messy. If the gasket starts to move around on you when you try to place the pan back on try this.I use some fine sewing thread and tied the gasket to the pan in the corners. After you have the pan on you can snip the excess thread off.Worked for me.

Yep - but you'll need a 23mm and 15/16 wrench to get the pan off.

Use this orifice as a drain to discard the old fluid.
Most gasket are sold with filters and are called a "kit".
Remove all the gasket material on BOTH mating surfaces. (3M pads are great for alum)
Hand tighten the bolts just beyond snug if you cannot get a hold of a Torque Wrench.

Like David said, I would try snugging the bolts up first.

If the dipstick fitting in Punk's picture does not come apart easily, I would suggest leaving it alone. I've only tried on three of them. On two I gave up because they were too tight. On the third I got more aggressive, and though it did unscrew, the threads were totally destroyed in the process.

You can just unbolt the dipstick tube mounting bracket and drop the pan and tube together. You can't get it out from under the car unless it is pretty far up in the air, but you don't need to get it out from under the car to replace the gasket.

I am making a small leap of faith that this is true for a 240 because my trans experience was on 740s,

Charley
