Clunk in front end - 1997 S90/960 900 1997

Volvo made both the 960 and S90 in 1997, so I’m never quite sure where to post my questions because I don’t know if the 1997 960 and the 1997 S90 are exactly the same mechanically or almost the same or what. So I’m posting this problem in both the 960 and S90 sections.

Our 1997 S90 has developed a clunk in the front end when we hit small bumps in the road. It sounds like my 240 did when one of the rear A-arm bushings was bad. Any particular things tend to go out first on these cars? I’m thinking A-arm bushings, ball joints, strut tower connections under the hood, maybe tie rods. The car only has 103k on it and looks like it was well cared for. Would the information in the 700/900 FAQ section apply to a 97 S90?? Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Clunk in front end - 1997 S90/960 900 1997

Addition to my original post: The clucking started after I had the car up on jack stands to flush the brakes. I thinking that taking the wheels off the ground, allowing the suspension travel to max out, probably finished off a bushing that was in bad shape. I know from personal experience that this happened to our 240 wagon when I replaced the struts a few years ago. Does this info point to any particular bushing on a 960/S90?

DougC, yes 960s from '95 on are pretty much the same as V/S90s. The clunking is probably caused by worn rear control arm bushings. These cars (as opposed to 240/740/940 and early 960) have a greatly different front suspension with a large lower 'A' arm. The rear bushing is a large rubber doughnut. It provides better compliance than the earlier design-but the bushings are a weak point. They typically fail at 70-100K miles. Not real expensive to replace-maybe %200 for both sides. The right way is replace the bushings (which requires a press, I think), not the whole 'A' arm-aftermarket replacement arms are typically stamped steel cheapies which will not provide the low unsprung weight and strngth the factory cast arms give.
    I just rejoined the 960/90 ranks myself-now have a nice black '96 960 with 153K. :)
    sredwine '94 940 has 236K

S90 was just a re-badged 960, same car, maybe some minor option or trim change to justify the new name. The torsion (anti sway) bar links can cause a clunk. Small, cheap and easy to change.

I had a similiar noise on my 91 740 turbo wagon. It would clunk/rattle over small road bumps/holes. Everything was tight. Problem was the strut.
Jack it up, pull the front wheels, lift the strut bellows & see if the strut shafts are leaking. Mine both were. Pulled one strut & the shaft rattled side to side. A real PITA to remove the strut insert nut but I swapped the strut insert & quiet.
    good luck
