I keep hearing people say they have "straight comando bumpers" What are they .. where do they come from. Does anyone have a picture?
Thanks

While many people think the term commando is applied to the older bumpers because they are tougher looking, I think they are misinformed. Or perhaps a bit naive (LOL). 83 is the first year for the "non-commando" bumpers. That is, the more utilitarian, aluminum front and back beams with the full, plastic covers. The exposed, all aluminum, wrap-around bumpers are "nude", except for the rubber rub strips on the leading (or trailing) edges. Funny you should mention this. Someone was selling a set of commandos on TB the other day. On a whim, I took the time to search the web for the origins of the term "going commando".

We had commando bumpers till 1985 in Canada. All of the Canadian 240 turbos had them painted black. I have a couple of black sets of them in my shed because I like the old school look without the lower plastic trim along the bottom of the doors that goes with the later type bumpers.

Good point. Last week's Car Talk puzzler was an easy one for me because I had known a rare person who felt the Checker Marathon was under-appreciated as a passenger car. This goes back to when Checker was still (barely) in business and had begun to sell outside of the fleet market -- they also had a car that changed little over the decades.

But the 5mph bumper law that changed the shape of 240's, affected Checker with what I would describe as commando bumpers. They looked very much like a piece of highway guard rail, unadorned by any rubber.

Art, those Checkers made late in their (dare I say it, checkered career?) looked like they just took some of the Armco barrier from the catalog and stuck it on the pointy and blunt end. I don't think the folks at Checker ever heard of Ghia or Ital design in their lifetimes..but what a piece of machinery. If it is tough enough for New York City cab duty, it is probably pretty darn stout. (!)

I have the commando bumpers on our 1982. They are indestructible.
More than once, we've had other cars end up in the body shop who tried
    to tackle with those bumpers.

Nary a scratch, I loved those bumpers 200

My first Volvo was an '81 244 M46 that had the commando bumpers.
In my area, people like to ride your rear.

I had people rear-end me three times with that car; the damage to their car was extensive.

One time the tow truck had to lift my car off of the other car to separate them. I only had to fix my muffler/tailpipe. Her car was totaled. She was a typical teenager, talking on her cell phone. When her dad came to pick her up; I told him what she was doing during the accident. Oops!

All three times the other car's front end was driven into the engine. I had no wrinkling in the trunk and my bumper shocks even sprang back out fully/evenly.

I should have put kill markers on my driver's door.

Chevy Citation: Brake check on a drunk; led away in handcuffs. I was young/stupid/lucky.
Saturn Coupe: Teenager talking on her cell phone
Toyota Camry: Old lady driving at night who shouldn't have been driving at all.

BTW: I now leave extra room between me and the car in front of me. It has saved me from numerous chances of rear-end accidents. Although sometimes people come even closer because I am so far from the next car.

Would those be like the 74-75 164 and the 74 140s?
And do they have to have the decoration hanging from them like the picture?

I think what you say about the last of the 140/160 cars is correct, if I remember some of the few times I've seen them. The OP was asking for a picture, and so far in the thread I hadn't seen any offered -- hence my 8-year-old photo of our icy '79.

Here are some more pics I have posted before, in trying to help another brickboarder determine which fenders fit what year 240's around the parking lights. I included a scan of a Volvo ad featuring a (78?) 264, on which you remarked once, thinking maybe I wasn't feeding my daughters. That was funny!

They are the big bumpers on all the early 240 series cars. Compare these to the late 80's models and you will see the difference.

The commando bumpers were on the early 240s, perhaps 85? and earlier (please correct as needed). They were beefy and didn't have the plastic cover and they'd probably survive an impact with a nuclear weapon. Personally, I think they stuck out too far to look good.

I consider them to be better than the post '85(?) ones. The rubber stands up better to impact than the plastic ones and the aluminum continues around the whole bumper.

The plastic trim on the newer bumpers is fragile, especially in cold weather.

I think they mercifully discontinued the commando bumpers after the 82 model year. I think at the price of scrap aluminum, you could retire to the Bahamas if you owned 10 of them.

"I think they mercifully discontinued the commando bumpers after the 82 model year. I think at the price of scrap aluminum, you could retire to the Bahamas if you owned 10 of them." I did scrap ten bumpers. There is work involved because to get the good price you need to remove the rubber and stamped metal rubber mounts--do you have any idea how many screws are involved. However--no Bahamas in my future-- but my wife didn't have to cook for a few days. And just so no one gets upset--not one of those cars was worth saving but parts from them went to keep many other 240's going. -- Dave

Thanks for the info! That's pretty darn hilarious, especially for a wild guess. I'd wager you were into it quite a while getting those down to just aluminum for the recycler.
