ALIENS IN MY DASHBOARD....... 200

THIS IS NOT THE 'USUAL' BLOWER MOTOR QUESTION........

FIRST OFF, IT CONCERNS MY 87 244, WHICH I'VE OWNED FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS......WHEN I BOUGHT IT, I KNEW, GOING IN, IT WOULD NEED A BLOWER MOTOR SOON, BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, ABOUT 10-12 YEARS AGO, ON MY 74 144...I KNEW WHAT I WAS GETTING INTO, BUT THE PRICE WAS RIGHT...........

I DON'T USUALLY USE THE BLOWER MOTOR IN THIS CAR, IN OUR MILD, PACIFIC NORTHWET CLIMATE(I'M WITHIN MORTAR RANGE OF IPD), I CAN KEEP THE CAR WARM ENOUGH, USING THE RAM AIR EFFECT OF THE COWL VENTS, AND I HAVEN'T GOTTEN AROUND TO RECHARGING THE A/C SYSTEM, SO I NEVER TOUCH THE BLOWER IN THE SUMMER......

IF I TRY TO USE THE BLOWER MOTOR FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, IT GIVES ME THE USUAL DIEING SQUAWKS OF A BLOWER MOTOR ON IT'S LAST LEGS......IF I WAIT TILL THE CAR IS WARMED UP AND RUNNING DOWN THE ROAD, I CAN(BUT DON'T USUALLY) RUN THE FAN, IF I WANT TO, WITH NO NOISE........

HERE'S THE ODD PART.IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS, WHEN I START THE CAR IN THE MORNING, WITH THE FAN BLOWER >OFF<.....I'VE GOTTEN A QUICK, HALF SECOND, SQUAWK...I FIGURED MAYBE IT WAS JUST THE 'CIRCUITS' ENERGIZING AND DIDN'T WORRY ABOUT IT.....

THEN MAYBE A WEEK AGO, IT CONTINUED TO SQUAWK WHEN I FIRST STARTED IT.....I TURNED THE FAN BLOWER MOTOR ON, RAN IT THROUGH ALL FOUR SPEEDS, AND I ACTUALLY HEARD THE FAN SQUAWK, >AT A DIFFERENT PITCH< AT THE SAME TIME I WAS HEARING THE STRANGE SQUAWK!!!! BUT THEN, THE STRANGE SQUAWK WENT AWAY, WHEN I SHUT THE BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH OFF........

THIS MORNING, IT DID IT AGAIN...BUT NO AMOUNT OF DIDDLING WITH THE FAN BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH WOULD SHUT OFF THE 'STRANGE' SQUAWK.....I DECIDED TO JUST DRIVE AND SEE WHAT 'FRIED'..........BUT AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET, I REACHED FOR THE A/C ROTARY SWITCH, SPUN IT ON, FOR A SECOND, THEN OFF, AND THE STRANGE SQUAWK WENT AWAY, UPON MY TURNING THE A/C SWITCH TO OFF.......

I KNOW THERE IS ONLY ONE BLOWER IN THERE, HOW CAN I GET TWO, DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT NOISES, FROM THE SAME MOTOR, AT THE SAME TIME??????

I'M AT A LOSS......ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEAS???? SIMILAR EXPERIENCES?????

SHOULD I SET MY PHASER TO 'STUN'??? OR CALL AN EXORCIST??????

Just a thought on the duel tone.. maybe the second bearing is starting to go bad now. so now, sometimes, you have two bearings singing.

The CAPS LOCK thing.. I always have mine locked when doing my Work, I can't tell you how many times I look up to see a paragraph of CAPS. I'm not shouting , I am sometimes too lazy to rewrite everything.

The weapon of choice here is neither a phaser nor a mortar -- just some covert intelligence from the Volvo spies. The AC switch has a connection to the heater blower on low speed. The idea is to keep some air moving past the evaporator so it won't freeze up. The difficulty is, the AC knob gets to be very stubborn to turn completely off.

      AHA!!! THAT WOULD EXPLAIN IT!!!!

THAT'S WHY THE NOISE HAPPENED WHEN I FIRST STARTED UP, AND WHY I WAS ABLE TO SHUT THE NOISE OFF >COMPLETELY< WHEN I TURNED THE A/C KNOB ON, AND THEN, APPARENTLY, THIS TIME, >COMPLETELY< OFF..........

I STILL CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHY IT MADE TWO, DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT, NOISES, BUT AT LEAST NOW I CAN RESOLVE THE ISSUE.......

YOU DA MAN, ART, YOU DA MAN!!!!

Maybe it made different noises at different speeds.
Some solvent into the bearings might greatly reduce the squawking - It is usually
because the lubricant has degraded to a varnish-like polymer.
Lacquer thinner would be my first choice.
Do us a favor and undo your Caps Lock key.

          George,

I tend to agree with your comments except for the solvent. The fan housing is a polymer, if it happens to be polycarbonate (quite common in cars), the solvent will cause the plastic housing to become brittle and shatter, ie. the solvent breaks down the long polymer chains and the plastic loses all resilience. Kind of like map pockets after fifteen years of UV exposure but with solvent, that fifteen years gets shortened to 15 minutes!

They are bronze bushings, probably on the way to looking like these.

The ingenious plastic oiling tubes some have somehow gotten in there seem like magic in my imagination. Love to see pics of all these fixes.

Regarding the solvent and door pockets-- ironically my solvent welds seem stronger than the surrounding material...

Art, most likely the map pockets are PVC which is highly susceptible to UV if my 10 year memory is still working properly. And no, I don't know what plastic the jarvic 7 in the middle of the dash is made of (heater box), but I'd go easy on the solvents just to be safe!
