key / VIN question 200 1987

Has anyone had trouble getting a key made with the VIN ?

While I was picking up a new exhaust pipe ($190) from our local Volvo dealer I wanted to have a new key made. The partsman said that the VIN came up as a 1986 car and the chassis serial number produced a different key form.

Looking up how to decode the VIN online (http://apps.volvocars.us/ownersdocs/1987/1987_VIN-VIC/vin1987.html) says the car is an '87 245. The VIN is the same on the Mfg tag, the dash tag, and the drivers door.

Ideas ?

Greg

I have found that most dealers no longer have the key cutting equipment to cut older keys. The newer keys have to be ordered directly from Volvo.

What I do is order the blank from the dealer and have a good local locksmith cut it from my current key or the pulled passenger door lock. Only difference between regular key and valet key is that the 10th tumbler isn't cut on the valet key but the 9 and 10th tumblers are the same size/depth.

Make sure that the key you order from the Dealer is OE key with the Volvo logo on it not an overpriced aftermarket unit. DAMHIKT.
