Is this possible? I don't think so. 200

I was looking at an ad on craigslist for a 240 volvo. The seller states that the odometer stopped working at 96xxx but that he can connect the car to a computer and show that the car has closer to 100k.Is this possible? I have not spoken to the seller about this but was wondering if any of you know of anything like this.

Maybe he's not talking about connecting the car to a computer, but rather lookup the car's vin on a computer, and try to estimate its mileage based on info such as carfax...

LOL on reading about typing 100,000 on Ms Word!

If this seller called the local volvo dealer and asked if they could tell the mileage from the computer, and they mistakenly thought he was talking about a much newer volvo, then the answer could have been yes,but where on earth did he get rubber bumpers?

There certainly are such car computers out there but I doubt any 240 ever had one. One of the simple ways to tell is does the schematic show any connection between the speedo circuit and any black box. My understanding is 240 speedos only had a connection to the differential sensor plus power and ground. Unless that differential speed sensor or the odometer is feeding signals to something else there is no way for any black box to have the milage information.

LH 2.4 and Regina FI both like having vehicle speed info to be happy... which is processed by the speedo and sent to the ECU.

I'm pretty skeptical that the ECU can track mileage, though.

Right, the LH2.4 ECU cannot. It has no non-volatile storage (without battery). Bendix/Regina does, but was not used in the 200 series.

absolutely true. in fact when i hook all my 240's up to a computer the lovely female voice from my computer software even tells me when i need to change my brake pads, oil filter and coolant.

seriously though, ask him if he believes that nonsense or is just you who is supposed to?

Anything is possible, but the veracity of what he is telling you the actual mileage is would be highly suspect, at best.

Anything is possible

I agree Zach, something surprises me every day. I just have to hope they are welcome surprises.

Envision this 240 as a 91-93 equipped with ABS, and unknown to me, the designers included a non-volatile counter in silicon which is accessible to those in-the-know with the appropriate serial interface. Can't think of the motive, honestly, but its those legal, product liability kind of things that continue to surprise me, and not often in a good way.

Sounds like fantasy, I know, but I am not able to flatly refute it, but just assume it is a bit of hearsay that got corrupted along the way.

The car is an 88.I sent the guy an email asking him how and where it is that he is going to connect a computer to verify the milage.Just waiting on his reply.

He is going to go into Microsoft word and type in 100,000

That is about the only way he can pull that one off.

You have to wonder if this person is on the BB and reading all this later.....

Regards,

Paul
