From your profile email, are you in North Carolina? I am in Charlotte. Would look at it with you.

a "possible" head gasket failure... means the problem hasn't been diagnosed... that's how I'd see it as a potential buyer. So, as a potential buyer, I'd plan for the worse, which would be engine replacement...

Which makes the car have very little value, except perhaps what it would be worth to me as a parts car..

That's not to say I wouldn't fix it.. but it's all I'd be willing to pay personally for a car with a known problem of unknown origon.

Were I you.. if you think its a $2000 car in current condition with no problems, spend $1000 to get it fixed and sell it as a good car. A $2000 car with a 'potential' head gasket issue is worth sub $500...

    Just my opinion is all..

Depends on what part of the country you're in.

Is the evidence of head gasket failure just a little water from the passenger side of #3 cylinder? If so, then this problem depreciates that car by only $200-$300 for a do-it-yourselfer. The car needs a Saturday in the garage getting a good cleaning of the head and intake area while it gets its head gasket replaced. Replacing the head gasket on a 19-year-old brick should be considered normal (albiet PITA) maintenance, like changing the front struts.

If the car has overheated or is pushing water out of the radiator, or has water in the oil, it is probably now a parts car, unless the interior and body are unusually pristine.

When I asked Mr Goddard how much he wanted for the pile of 54 chev 1/2 parts I was buying he said "Lets start at a million and work down" My reply "how about $45" "sold!" his reply. Some bricker with a bucket of wrenches will want to repair it if it's clean and unworn otherwise. Sub $500 as is sounds good here in the Great White North. Take care. Paul
