Rear Lights Brightness 900 1993

The right parking tail light on '93 945 is about twice as bright as the corresponding bulb on the left side. This extra intensity melts the plastic housing. The measured voltage is the same between the left and right sides; I have changed the bulbs around along with the holders,I have tried different tail light assemblies, all this shedding no light on the reason for the extra intensity. Any ideas?

Is this the little tail-only bulb or a dual filament, tail-and-brake bulb? If the latter, it has somehow gotten inserted 180 deg. turned from where it should be, as Herb suggests, although the socket would have to be pretty messed up to allow that. This could be checked by applying brakes with all lights off and seeing if that bulb gives a dim brakelight.

If it is the little bulb, there is an identical looking, but high watt version, bulb No. 1003 - about 10W instead of the proper 5W. Maybe that's in there.

Is it possible that on the bright/hot side, the brighter filament meant to be lit when braking is being illuminated on the running light circuit instead?

    Good luck!
