LF Door Latch, hard to open... 200 1992

...and a few more tugs will break the handle.

I need some help with this. I have to pull up on the handle almost hard enough that something will break. That final tug upward reeks of something giving up.

I removed the door panel and checked the action the best I could (it was getting dark) and sprayed some lube on the linkage joints. I am not sure I got the lube at all the critical joints, . It seems like something is out of whack with the extra effort pulling up, pulling up more than normal.

I saw a barely accessible adjustment on the inside near the handle. This is a threaded barrel near the top of the linkage. Would this solve the problem?

Tom

Edit:
I just found this thread.

door handle!

One of three things. Lube, adjust or replace the door handle. Will a bad door handle cause this issue? I had never replaced one and not sure how that would cause the problem.

    Tom,

It is simpler than all that.

Remove the door handle and straighten it out. The adjustment will probably not need tweaking, once you bend the pot metal back where it once was and tighten the mounting screws. All depends on how many times someone has "fixed" it before. The lithium grease bath is not your solution here.

If the latch post (in the B pillar) is all marked up and worn, the hinge is worn and the door is drooping. Temptation is to move the pin and guide, but better to reposition or replace the worn hinge.

Why do croutons come in airtight packages? It's just stale bread to begin with.

Yup, and thanks. Found a scarred latch post. Time for a visit to the salvage yard. Needless to say, if the latch post is clean the hinge should be good. I'll have to look but any lefts for the left side and rights for the rights.

      Tom
