strange engine problem 200 1989

Howdy fellow Brickheads, got a strange/new engine running problem here.
1989 240, car starts but then a soon as I increase rpms the engine dies then runs ect... almost sounds like its hitting a rev. limiter (but not) The spark tester (light between coil and cap ) indicates spark energy the whole time the engine runs through out this cycle. : I have all ready replaced the ECU with a up-rated unit (951 ?) to fix another problem. This problem is intermittent, sometime the car runs fine. The TPS is covered in oil (from another problem , overflow from engine dipstick) The CPS has a white stripe (newer type ?) Will a faulty CPS shut down the injectors ?? BTW NO codes . The problem seems fuel related not spark. Already tried swapping the FP relay with no change. Ideas ??
thanks

    strange engine problem SOLVED ! 200 1989

the strange running/rev problem turned out to be caused by a faulty TPS switch.
The contact switch for the idle circuit was defective (always closed)(soaked in oil also)
The CPU thinks the car is still in idle mode and retards the spark 10deg.
A used one from an '88 (slightly different part number) works fine

    thanks for all the guesses

The in-tank pump may not be feeding the main pump properly. I have seen the hose on the in-tank unit crack and when the fuel is low, it will cause intermitant stalling and hesitating. The prepump may not even be working. It is a pain to remove and check ,but if the main pump sounds like it's laboring, it would be worth a look.

the pre-pump is working (or at least drawing amps)
engine will stumble and die under quick acceleration, but open throttle slowly to 2000-3000 rpm and it will rev then die, rev then die, will not rev very high. the spark tester shows constant spark from coil the whole time.
Can a bad CPS or TPS tell the ECU to shut fuel under certain conditions. ??
more testing and info to follow

Have you recently disconnected the AMM? Sometimes the Pins in the connector get screwed up after reconnecting. I did this once, I did get an intermittent problem like this until I discovered a twisted pin in the AMM connector

Check the base of the CPS for frayed insulation. It sounds like a failed AMM except for the intermittent part. You might disconnect and then reseat the AMM connector and spray with electrical contact cleaner.
