Does Intake manifold crack ever? 200 1988

Traced a vacumleak to the intake manifold gasket and replaced it. When it was ofF I found gasoline in the manifold and throttle body ( this is not my "real" problem but could may give some leads), vacuum hose from FPR seemed dry and later when I checked fuel pressure it seemed fine to. Anyways, when I put everything back together the vacuum leak is still there in between the 2nd and 3rd injector. The surfaces on the head and manifold was undamaged. Coul;d there be a crack in the manifold?

Thanks
John

Have you changed the injector seals?

BTW, while it is possible for a casting defect to emerge in almost anything, I've never heard of an intake manifold cracking. No heat or pressure there.

I don't injector seals have been replaced ever and I should look into that. I think I've located the hissing sound to come from in between the head and gasket, I could just put some gasket sealer there for now right?

It is fairly simple to remove the manifold and replace the gasket. Applying gasket "sealer" is tougher: you might make a bigger mess than it is worth; don't use silicone which will ruin your oxygen sensor. Some liquid vinyl electrical tape sealer would likely be best and easiest to scrape off when you do fix it.

I was about to apply silicone, I'm glad I asked first. Thanks for the advice! I might just take it apart again and see if I screwed something up the first time. Is it possible to ruin the gasket if I tightend the bolts to much? I didn't have a torque wrench last time and now I can't remember how much I should tighten it.

Intake and exhaust are both bolted at 15 lbs. Which is not very much, kind of 'snug' if you don't use a torque wrench. The real problem is having a couple too tight. Start torquing in the middle bolts and work your way to the front and back.

If you take the intake manifold off again, check the mating surface of it for flatness. If it is warped take it to a machine shop to have it resurfaced. I have run into this once and the warp was in excess of 0.1", more than enough to cause a leak.

Klaus: I'll retorque and hopefully that will work.

Jorrell: If retorque it won't work I'll definetly check if it is warped.

              Thanks guys!
