Having a problem wiring an auxilary horn relay

I am installing a set of air horns on a 1994 940T. When I wire up the horns as indicated for a car with a grounded horn button the compressor activates.

Photobucket

When I connect the wire (85) that I have spliced into the existing horn wire (yellow on car) the relay closes and the compressor activates. When I put a meter on this wire there is no continuity to ground unless the horn button is used to complete the circuit (as you would expect). So it does not show continuity to ground with the meter but is providing a ground for the compressor. If I simply attach a wire to 85 it will activate the compressor when grounded.

I have installed these horns before on Volvos. If you notice the smudge in the diagram connecting the 12v source to 30 it is because there is a misprint in the diagram. I found that out several years ago trying to install identical horns on a 740.

So the question is why does the wire spliced into the yellow horn wire on the car not show continuity to ground (unless the horn button is pressed) but yet provides a ground for the compressor?

Thanks for you help.

Randy

    solved

I had to leave the original horn leads disconnected and use one of the blue/black wires (connected to the horn button) to provide the closure for the air horn relay.

I wanted to have the original horns work along with the air horns. I grounded one of the connections on each horn and then ran a wire from the second connection on the horns to the relay for the air compressor.

I wanted the original horns to function because in previous installations I found that a quick touch of the horn button simply activated the electric horns but did not allow enough time for the air compressor to spool up and sound the air horns. Seems like this set comes up at the same time as the electric horns.

Solution found- Edit: not really a solution

I can not explain why they was no continuity to ground on the splice into the yellow wire at the horn but it still managed to provide a ground for the compression.

Splicing into the blue/black wire at the horn seems to have solved the problem.

Edit: splicing into the blue/black wire only solves the problem when I leave the original horns disconnected. Once they are reconnected the compressor activates.

I would rather be doing something simple like changing a head gasket or a rear main seal (grin)
