need help high nox emissions 200 1990

Hello, I need help. My 1990 volvo 240 will not pass Texas emissions. I have read and been working the FAQ.
Car has 124,000 miles. I have replaced two vacuum lines, new air filter and correct plugs. Got a fault code of 212 so I replaced the O2 sensor with a new bosch O2 sensor. Last year I replaced the cat converter to pass the test.

Most recent test was last week.

    Yes! An exhaust leak [cracked exhaust manifold, bad gasket where manifold connects to exhaust or exhaust header to block] allowing outside air to be sucked into cat converter seems to be a very common source on the board when all is said and done for high NOX. Unfortunately it is the last thing people find after replacing O2 sensor, cat converter etc. I' afraid my car has developed a leak based on the burble sound of exhaust in the manifold area, my NOX was barely passing last time. So sound is one tip.

    Do you know about plugging the vacuum line coming out of the diaphragm at the ECU? (right front fender) Not getting a signal, the spark won't advance so much and this helps with NOX. The car will still run well enough without the extra advance.

      I believe that fix is for Volvo/Chrysler ignitions, mid-'81 through '88.

    High NOx is due to high combustion temperatures. So looking for an air leak is a good idea. Check the O2 sensor output to see if you can verify a lean condition.

    If running lean, how is the engine smoothness at idle?
    Check the plugs, if one is different it would indicate a manifold gasket leak.

    Worst case is that you need a new cat.

    Yes, I know that you replaced the cat last year. But some conditions of the car will destroy the cat in a week! One professional mechanic who used to contribute to this forum called the condition, "cat for a day". According to him, if the car isn't set up right (i.e., f/a mixture), the cat is quickly destroyed. If you don't find some other solution, putting on a new cat, again, is your last resort.

      Hi nox is lean to much air. These aftermarket cats are no where next to the original Volvo cats loaded with platinum pellets. with platinum near 1700 dollar an ounce levels again not sure what they are using these days for a cat that only costs 150 bucks???
      I replaced my original cat on my 88 afew years back and the Nox doubled the other numbers were fine, so the cat was not the problem,it was rattling and had failed NJ inspection so I figured it was bad.
      I have never had to replace the Bosch heated type O2 sensors on any of my Volvos
      70 144 250k
      72 145 175k
      75 164e 135k
      87 240 138 k still going
      88 240 127 k still going
      92 740t 212k cash for clunkers,cheap shit replacement heater control valve blew out in the Holland tunnel and the wife kept going to get out,once outside shut down and restarted to move it as the cops were on it!!
      Blew the headgasket oil in the coolant,still ran great for 2.3 more yrs. Passed NJ emission inspection. What killed it was the oil coming out on the exhaust side between the head and the block,became a fire hazard
      Last of the GREAT volvos
      Sorry to rant,but it was the AMM that fixed my emission problem,car was running to lean!!!! I had the luxury of pulling a known good one from my 87,which still has the original cat and still passes NJ inspection with no problems!!!

        Hello everybody.
        The exhaust manifold gasket was leaking. I replaced it and the car passed the Texas emissions test.
