fuel pump relay or not? 200

I had first struggle with fuel pump relay today. The relay was lying on the back felt panel (that is where PO left it - I do not know where is the stock mounting point for it?). My windshield is leaking I guess, otherwise I have no clue how the relay got full of water today. I found it when the car did not start at lunch.. I took it out, opened up, cleaned with ethanol - nothing worked. So I ended up driving home with fuses 2 and 4 jumped. It only works though when relay plugged in... I did another round of cleaning relay with sandpaper and soaking it in WD40, but to no avail. I called NAPA autoparts and they have it in stock for $55. But it seems like a lot of mark up compare with $15 from FCP Groton... I decided I can jump the fuses until new relay arrives. Is there any potential to do harm that way? (I disconnect them of course every time I turn off the engine not to wear pump and battery). I am still not 100% sure it is a relay and not a contact/wiring. I should try to test it on the bench I guess.. it was great to know the quick way to direct pump power-up! thanks to the board! it saved me a tow today ;)

fuel pump relay or not? 200

I had the same problem on my 88. The relay was full of water. I made sure I mounted it right side up instead of upside down. My leak from from a grommet that was pulled loose from the fire wall.

My issues were low power and intermittent stalling.

Never had a problem since I uprighted the relay.

Thanks a lot ! I also found that it is leaking from the grommet in the firewall.. I was driving for a week jumping the fuses. One night I forgot to disconnect them - good that neighbor heard some sound coming from under my car and let me know ;) It was still Ok for couple days and then jumping fuses did not help. I had to pedal to work - good it did not rain much that day ;) I thought my pump is wasted, but then the same day package finally arrived from FCP groton and new relay made it start right up! I did not look on the diagram but I guess I managed to cook old relay completely by jumping the fuses ;)

    Yeah it's the relay! 200

The water is most likely coming in around the wiper motor hole. I have that merit badge and also burned up an almost new relay thanks to that leak. My fuel pump was running with the car just sitting out in the drive however. After drying it out, it was dead.

Check the drains at the bottom of the car where the vents in the center of the car route the water. If those are clogged that will cause water to back up and come out that wiper motor hole. You can pull the carpet back and pull out the large round plastic plug and get a vacuum hose up in there. Be ready for a lot of junk and gunk if not done recently. And check your floorpan, that is also a well known rust out source, the water runs to the rear seat pan and let the rust begin.

Slip a plastic bag like a zip lock and put a zip tie to hold it in place and keep the new relay dry until you get the leak sorted out.

Jumper on the fuses will not do any damage as long as your jumpers are not having issues.

    Good Luck,

    Paul

PS: I now have a known good relay in the back of the car ready to go just in case.

Thanks a lot for the tip about drains! I will check them out. I was afraid I would need a new window seal.. that is the downside of California cars - rust free, but the rubber/plastic stuff deteriorate much faster than in colder climates..
