Introduction 200

Hello Bricksters!

Last summer, I officially became the owner of the family Volvo 244 with 272K miles. She was left out in the driveway for a year before I decided to resurrect her. With a new gas tank, timing belt, battery, tires and other things I've never heard of, she's as good as new now.

My dad bought the car when I was only 2, so she's become a sort of historical symbol that I just can't bear to let go of.

In the next few years, I'd like to replace the dashboard (it's cracked from the North Carolina sun) and perhaps the seat upholstery on the driver's side seat. The interior is blue, which is apparently hard to come by in junk yards.

My dad thinks I'm crazy obsessing over this car, but I'm a history student, so naturally it's a source of pride that a car built in 1985 is still running.

One question: What kind of routine maintenance should I expect to have done? I've only driven about a thousand miles since I had all the work done to get her running again.

Thanks in advance!

MW

Welcome to the madness! There are some REALLY rabid Volvo enthusiasts here, and I believe that you've come to the right place.
Things I can see in your future, if they haven't been taken care of:
    Suspension bushings
    shocks
steering components like ball joints and tie rod ends
    water pump
    fuel pumps and relays
I sure hope you are handy with tools and have the desire to work on these cars. It doesn't take too long at a shop rate of $90.00/hr. or more to exceed the market value of the car. As a car to work on they aren't too bad though. Procure a Bentley Manual as soon as practical if you don't already own one, and between it, the search function in here, and the folks on the board, I'll bet you'll have the information to keep your Brick going another 270k mi.

    MW,

Welcome aboard! The comments about "zero mileing" a 240 are correct. It is obvious that you have a "family connection" to the 240, as do I. Our first experience was with a new 89 240 sedan (244), it was a great car and gave it's life in 2002 in order to save my wife's life when it was shortened by four feet in a crash. Yes, my wife is a "Volvo saved my life" club member as a result. Please note that I'm sure the good Lord had a bit to do with that as well.

The drive train of that 89 wound up in the body of a 90 244 that was seriously abused by its previous owner, the 90 is still on the road today. Our 92 240 wagon (245) is just my daily driver now due to economic times and roughly 3 and a half years ago she was stripped down to a bare chassis. I'm not bragging by any means, I'm just saying that I understand your apparent "devotion" to an ol' brick. Another way of saying that is that you are NOT crazy as long as you know how to turn a wrench and ask questions on the Brick Board!

Welcome you have come to the right place, read all you can visit the FAQ's and ask questions. Although the FAQ's are for the 700/900 series all the engine and drivetrain info applies to your car.
When I get a new to me 240 I try to figure out what needs work and knock it out one project at a time. Hopefully you are handy with tools as it will make your car that much cheaper to keep going.
    Good luck
    Dan

I won't quote exactly what Dan said, but welcome to the club. I'd recommend finding the 'mile zero' checklist and see what you've done and what you have left to do to it to get everything to a good 'starting condition' that will be reliable for you for some time to come. Dan - I can't find that list - do you have it bookmarked somewhere?

      Cheers,
      Zach
