engine temp sensor? 900 1993

hi brickboard,

still got a problem with volvo 940 2.0 turbo.
Rough running when running up to 2000 rpm and a bit ropey after that.
Swapped out coil, leads, FPR, cleaned distributor cap up. All spark plugs a nice pale consistent colour, cleaned out IAC controller (checked it snapped open OK with a 12V battery - fine).

Dont think its rpm sensor as that would probably be a no-start type situation, tried a dodgy one I had and it didnt make a difference.

I've got no reading on my temp gauge on the dash which didnt strike me as unusual as the fuel gauge packed up long ago, but it's led me to wonder if it could be a shot engine temp sensor. Would this produce the intemittent rough running? Sometimes (rarely) it seems to run OK thought the gauge is always not working.

The only other candidate I suppose could be radio suppression relay, does anyone know if on a UK car its jammed down behind the turbo air cleaner box? and is it accessible.

any ideas welcome

pierso

there are two coolant temp sensors--one for the gauge--one for the FI. A bad temp sensor for the FI can cause all kinds of running problems. Both are located under the intake manifold--single wire for gauge--two wire harness for FI.

It is not rpm sensor or the RSRelay: they tend to fail completely, not by degrees. Have you tested the engine coolant sensor per FAQ instructions?

thanks guys, eventually found the engine problem to be a faulty plug which only showed up after several start stops at tickover speeds while checking other ignition components. Checking the plugs after running around at speed revealed them all to have a nice light brown appearance, but with multiple start/stops three were light brown and one was black.

I do still have to check the temp sensors though as my temp gauge doesnt work!

        regards
