Oil leak from head-gasket 200

I have observed wetness on the drivers side of block, below the air intake. It looks as if head gasket is sweating oil . It is around 2nd and 3rd cylinder area. Earlier I thought that this oil is coming from oil separator but that is not the case. The cam cover also looks well sealed and neither it is from air intake gasket area. The leak is minimal in the sense that the area is generally oily from head gasket and 3-4 " below it. Am I right in my conclusion and does that mean the head gasket is going to give way soon and I should plan to change it.

Regards,

Don't forget the rear cam seal at the back of the valve cover. Oil from there can hit the seam and go forward. Been there on my '86.

It is indeed from Gasket. I checked again, front of engine till the start of 2nd runner is clean and dry. The last 2-3" inches of driver side towards the back are clean and dry. It would have been far easier with rear seal.

Unlikely, not the usual failure mode of a head gasket. Clean it off thoroughly with a solvent and observe for a while. Oil is more likely running along the gasket line from the front. Oil usually seeps to the rear. Front cam seal?

Thanks, then I will clean it again and observe closely. I had actually cleaned the entire drive side with engine degreaser 2-3 months ago and replaced the oil seprator o-ring but then the leak is so slow that I forgot about it. Oil is at the seam of head gasket and spreads on block where all knock sensor and engine temp sensors are. There are dry areas on the block below thermostat and below oil seprator.

Actually, since I noticed this on a B23 years ago, I've read many other posts about this particular place for oil from the HG. But to answer your concerns, for my car, it was not a sign of impending doom, just an aging (300K) HG with a slow leak, right above the knock sensor. Only annoying from the standpoint of keeping a clean motor.

Thanks Art, I hope it holds up. The drop in oil level in my average OCI of 6k is not much. The oil is Castrol Syntec 10W40 so may be it is a contributing factor.

          Art,

Yesterday I noticed a fairly significant oil leak between the #2 and #3 cylinders on the passenger side. The HG is clean in front of and behind the oiled down area and the valve cover gasket is not weeping. Since this is a fairly significant leak I plan on doing an HG swap in the next few months. I don't believe it is an imminent sign of HG failure but an indication that I should have used an Elring HG rather than aftermarket when I put her back together 50+K miles ago.

...leak between the #2 and #3 cylinders on the passenger side.

Daughter has one of those too, on a B230. Not an insignificant, cosmetic leak either, but one that will require work this year. It is competing with the rear main seal for Exxon Valdez status.

              Art,

I'm wondering if they make double hulled head gaskets and rear main seals for a B230F! By the way, the water pump re-gasket, accessory belt swap, and hood release cable jobs held up just fine today on the trip back up to Herndon, VA. It's so nice not having squealing belts any more!
