Rear brake pad question 900 1994

Hi there,
I am changing my rear brake pads for the first time. I bought OEM pads that come with two types of shims. One is plain metal and the other shim is metal that has a rubber coating. Do I use both of them and which one of them goes against the caliper? My old pads just have one shim (a metal one).

Thanks!

per volvo instructions, grease shims, plain shim goes against piston

you can use just one shim. i have done this job countless times and sometimes when i had no shims everything installed and ran just fine.

i have found the surest way to eliminate brake squeal on the rear brakes and front ones was the chamfer the fresh pads on the leading and trailing edges 45 degrees. this virtually eliminates all brake squeal no matter what sort of pads you use irrespective whether you use shims or not.

I think I will use one shim. I can't get the pad to fit with both of them.
