Does this look likes time to replace the ignition key switch? 700 1991

1991 745T

Sometimes, when the key is at position II, only the seatbelt light is on. Sometimes, check engine, oil pressure, ABS, seat belt, shift arrow light are on. When this happens, there is no voltage on the skinny little post on the back of the alternator, and there is no charge to the battery (measures lower than13V). Sometimes, when the key is at position II, all the dash lights come on, and in such cases, the battery posts measure 14.3V and of course there is also 14.3V at the little post. Is this the definite sign of the electrical part of the switch going out? For now, I have to hot wire the little post to the battery to make sure the battery is charged. If I need to leave the car sit for more than 2 hours, I disconnect that temporary wire. Want to check with you guys before order the $100 little electrical part. Thanks. Erwin

Does this look likes time to replace the ignition key switch? 700 1991

I have currently a '93 945 and a '92 745 with the same--the biggest problem is that the alternator will not begin charging without the dash charge light "signal". I have rigged a wire with a bulb between the battery + and the alternator red wire post thus fooling the alternator into charging. The problem, however, I understand is the instrument cluster circuit board which is supposed to be cracked in places which causes the intermitent symptoms--not the ign. switch. I haven't attempted the repair yet. Keep posting with progress report.

      good point

I had a 91 940 with no warning lights going on. the battery wound not charge until reving to 1200 rpm.

I could not pass smog b/c the check light would not come on and go out.

I heated all the solder points on the circuit board per faq session.

      It all worked then!

To see if the board has some loose connx, try removing the cluster but keep it connected to the wiring harness. just hold the cluster on a slight diagonal over the steering housing. Put the the key in KPII and reach you hand in behind the back of the cluster and tap the circuit board all around and see if the lights go on or off -- if yes you got a loose solder point
