I know this is a stupid question and I really debated not posting it.
My 90 245 has a red volvo one and my 88 has a cheap aftermarket one. I found a green one at the local pullapart yesterday and like it better.


Is there any difference between red and green gas caps?

According to Tasca the red cap, part # 9142541, supersedes both the green cap, part # 3514227, and the all metal cap, part # 1246521. That might indicate some difference but I don't know what it would be.

Anyway, use the red cap without qualm and the green cap is fine on your '88.

It was a European market thing, as we switched to unleaded fuel there were different colour caps.

At one point you could order the cars with or without catalytic converters and lamda sond. Cars set up for exclusively unleaded fuel had green caps, leaded fuel cars had red caps. Once every car was unleaded only (1992 from memory) the caps went back to black.

My 1985 is a Lambda car, complete with catalytic converter and it has the red cap. It's been on the car since it was new.

Our late model 92 245 has a green gas cap with a date code that matches other parts on the car within reason. That being said, it is possible that it was replaced at some point with a bone yard part.

My 87 244 GL has a red one and the 91 245 has a Green one. Never knew what the color ment. Greg

Green was the factory color.

Thanks Jorrel, I guess I have a spare now. 2 greens and a red!

If I had to guess, Volvo uses colors on caps to indicate a feature such as vented or non-vented. Kind of like the colors they use on the pressure caps for the radiator reservoir (different color, different pressure). So if I had to guess, the red cap (if it is factory) should not be considered a spare.
