Parts Quality 200

Hi Folks,

Just wanted to see if anyone else has noticed that the quality of "new" parts for our cars has declined rapidly over the last, say, ten years. Of course most parts that are marked as "new" are probably remanufactured, but if it is done right, they should be as good as new, or better.

I've noticed this phenomenon particularly with suspension parts. Ball joints, tie rod ends, bushings -- things like that. The OEM parts on the car held up for over ten years, almost fifteen in the case of the trailing arm bushings. I've already gone through two sets of replacement bushings, and three sets of ball joints just in the last 6 years.

The exhaust seems to develop leaks every three or four years. I used Starla last time, I believe. Once again, the original exhaust was 12 or 13 years old when I finally replaced it (not including the danged rear muffler that seems to rust out every 18-24 months). We don't have salt on the roads here so I am thinking the replacements should last longer.

It's frustrating, but I suppose this is one of the caveats of owing an older car.

I concur. There is a bunch of junk out there that isn't up to the task. As others have mentioned, if you've got questions, we've got opinions on brands and suppliers.

Parts Quality - BMW parts have also deteriorated 200

I have a 1981 320i, and replacement parts are definitely not as robust as the originals. I have also had problems with lower control arms, etc not lasting more than a few years. The boots on my rear axles finally failed at 27 years. I wonder if the new axles will do as well.....

Where in Nova Scotia do they not use salt on the roads? My 240 is coated with road salt at the moment.

I get about 3 years out of the Starla exaust sytems is Nova Scotia. I am pretty sure Starla exaust parts are just rebranded Walker parts. Thats not a long time but a whole system is only about 200 bucks so I don't worry about it.

I don't even think dealer purchased systems are the same as the cars original system. We noticed with our Honda Civic that the original system lasted a long time, but the 2nd Honda dealer installed system only lasted about 3 years.

Don't know, as I have not lived there for over 20 years. ;-) I am down in Southern California, and so is the brick.

When in doubt, ask here about brands. Some parts are good to get in the aftermarket, some parts are best purchased from Volvo.

Sounds like you're getting cheap bushings and ball joints. Neither of which will save you money.
