Suggestions: Replacement Speedo Drive Gear on Transmission 200 1984

So, the speedo drive assembly on my 84 244 went out. I've already hooked a drill up underneath the car and the problem is definitely at the transmission. I've already tried taking the white plastic assembly off the transmission, but it won't come out (yes allen bolt removed). A knowledgeable gentleman at Volvo of Nashville said that after removing the allen bolt, the assembly should come out easily; mine does not. There is an 83 244 as a potential donor at pull-a-part but the allen bolt head is all buggered up, so I have to see if I get creative with no power tools :P

1) Does the assembly not wanting to come out of my car indicate anything?

2) Is this a common failure? (Not many 200 posts I could find on BrickBoard).

3) How should I go about removing the assembly from my brick?

4) Should I get the one from pull-a-part or try and find someone on here with a replacement?

5) Tips?

The factory installed driven gears with various tooth counts to accomodate the different rear axle ratios without having to put different speedometers in. I think there were three, and they are ID'd by colour. Black is one (20teeth, IIRC), can't remember the others.

My son's 81 had the M46 replaced by the P.O. and it looks like it came from a later manual 240 with the 3.31 axle. His car has the 3.73 axle with the result that the speedo and odo read about 13% high. Something to watch out for.

Ok... so I got the "new" drive off of the 83 at the junkyard and got it home. I also got the old drive out of my 84. I think the reason the old drive was so tough to remove is the transmission was recently rebuilt and the seal on the speedo drive had been replaced, so it was tight. When I removed the drive, the gear was completely gone off the end of the shaft - in the tranny I guess :P

Get this. When I put the new drive in, it sank too far into the transmission. So, when I removed it to check and make sure the housings were the same size (which they were) I dropped the new gear and it broke!!! PITA! So now, I don't know why the assembly is going so far into the transmission AND I still have no speedometer/odometer/cruise control.

Does anyone know if it's terribly bad to leave the part of that gear in there???

If anybody has one of these they can sell to me, please do. I'm going to make a posted ad in the classifieds as this was my only option at the junkyard.

If you go to the link below there they talk about that part you need.
They can do a salvage yard search to try to find one..
I hope this helps.... I was keeping my fingers crossed for you on
      your search today...darn.

Going back out to the junkyard today and see if one of the 700 series cars maybe has one in it. Everything else out there has the electronic speedometer and no other junkyard locally has it... called about 12 of them. IPD told me they don't know where to get one and Volvo of Nashville told me to call IPD.

There's this guy I hate buying stuff from I haven't called yet... ripped me off before. Of course I'm not sure if I need this bad enough to buy one from him.

        Thanks all,
        -Ryan

It's been a while since I pulled one. I think, just o-rings keep it in and from leaking. Remove allen bolt and plate and try turning the body while pulling. Maybe you can screw cable back on and pull?

Try a small vise grips on the bolt head at the yard.

Thanks NewMexico240, but it's actually the drive gear that goes in the side of the transmission that I need, not the cable... You threw those websites out there pretty quick!!! Maybe you also know where I could get the drive gear?

I like both of those ideas trev29. I tried vice grips on it yesterday in the weaning light to no avail. Today, I've got a hack saw and spare blade - I'm sure I can cut off the allen bolt with enough time. I like the idea about screwing the cable back on and pulling - will try that.

Hope to update tonight that it's fixed - thanks all.

Oh, I thought you were looking for a speeo-cable.
I am going to look around my Bentley and the internet
to try to see what your talking about....

Good luck on the fix and do let us know how it went.

Just thought I would let all know I ended up using a red gear. It was a little different in the dimensions in the housing, actual gear length (but not tooth count) and gear shaft. The red shaft has a metal housing and it was too large by .5mm. To overcome this, I made a ghetto "lathe" with my drill and took it down to the right size with some sand paper and a lot of time. Bought some sink gaskets from home depot and PRESTO. New speedo gear with a metal housing!!! Yay. All is well and I hope this finds someone like me one day.

Thanks all, and keep em goin'.
