looking at a another project 88 245- headgasket? 200

Loosing my 86 244 this month to the facts its time for it to be parted out due to rust and a bent front crossmember/oil pan. Been looking for my next project to part my 86 into.

Looked at a $500 88 245 today with considerable needs all around except the body is acceptably decent. Not the original paint job but its clear the front passengers fender was hit since the spacing above the front light is larger and out of spec on that side.

Looked at a nice oil mess on and around the waterpump. Was told the car overheats unless the heat is turned on. The dipstick had rust on the upper portions. Anyone know if that is a definite sign of a leaking head gasket? Didn't see oil in the coolant reservoir. The car doesn't start at the moment. All lights come on but there is not attempt for the starter to do anything. Suspect the automatic trans' safety switch.

I left thinking I could find a better car. But wondering if maybe I shouldn't just give it a go and rebuild that engine. But my main concern about replacing a head gasket is I don't know how much high temp driving has been done. Wondering if the pistons can be damaged to where you can't do a head gasket or would I better off just replacing the engine with my 86 that also has a M46 attached to it. Swing the whole drive train and engine in one go? Any thoughts?

You'll have quite a bit of extra canoodling to change the donor car over to a manual, in addition to all of the "discovery" in the rest of the systems. It can certainly all be done, but it does take time, talent, and a facility. My temptation would be to keep looking, but that's just my $.02.

Oil mess sounds like the Cam Seal.. that leaves oil on the top of the water pump, the top of the alternator and a bit of juice on the Motor mount.
If you buy the car you probbaly will change the Timing Belt anyway so you know it's good, the Seal is just a few minutes more work.

Rust up high on the dipstick. not an indication of a head gasket, just condensation from short run drives over 20+ years probably.

Overheating.. could be Headgasket, could be as simple as a semi-clogged radiator.

I sent this thread just a second before the BB went down. I thought maybe you guys got sick of my posts. But not so.

Still waiting on this buy. A few things that get me wanting to buy the car.

      - had the r134 conversion done in 2005.
      - if I can get it for $300-$400 then I'll be able to swap over parts from the 86 sedan and get some $$ for sending it to the boneyard.
-I'll be able to get $$ from the original CAT that is on it. Plus sell the two headers I bought last year since the first one didn't fit right and the second (bosal) is still in its packaging. The potential buy has a good clean looking header
-original owners although the car looks to of had a small hit on the passenger front fender since it sits above the headlight different. Not original paint. Need to do the magnet test on the body.

The main draw back is the condition of the engine, auto trans, and the main fuel pump has a switch wired to it so the pump can be turned on or off. When the key is turned on the pump runs continuously. That makes me wonder what the hell.

I had an 88 in same state last year and I swapped the engine rather than fool w/ the headgasket. I think folks here estimate $400 for a headgasket replacement incl milling the head.

Overheating without the heater on could be a clogged radiator or clogged engine block. Warm it up and see if you get any visible leaks and/ or steam from the exhaust. My 88 blew white smoke when warm and bwas bad between cyls 2 & 3.

The AC conversion is worth it, even if get yet another car to swap it into.

Sounds like they switched out the Fuel Pump relay, maybe they didn't know where the relay was and just decided to run 12V direct to the pump.
It could have 'real' issues or it could be that they just did what they knew to do to get the car running.
