93 940, how to bypass neutral safety switch? 900

car will not start, plenty of battery, starter may be gone but if so it would be the first time one ever went on me without some kind of warning,so I am hoping it is something to do with that switch on the shifter....of course any other ideas and suggestions always welcome...Kris

I see you have 2 threads going on this same problem with different info. To narrow down the problem why not just run a test jumper from battery plus to the small wire on the starter solonoid and see if starter kicks over. That tells you if the problem is in the starter or the neutral/keyswitch circuit. By the way there are no relays in that circuit. A starter can fail gradually or without warning. have tried whacking with a hammer?

I have not tried the "whacking therapy" yet....

You can also use a remote starter switch to test starter/starter solenoid. Pull blade terminal (#50) from solenoid. (I'm working off memory from a 740, but I am assuming it is similar for a 940.) Connect one end of remote starter to the blade on starter solenoid and other end to battery +. Turn ignition to "On." Hit remote starter button. Engine should start. If it does, trace back in ignition key circuit and neutral safety switch for fault. If no start, starter solenoid/starter is at fault.

thanks Fredbyte, I was hoping against hope maybe that the starter was not gone, reasoning being ,it gave me no trouble what so ever and all the starters that have failed[previous to this one ] have made some weird noise, especially the clicking of the solenoid....

Do you have a wiring diagram?

Easiest thing to check is to pull the teeny wire off of the starter solenoid and check for voltage when someone turns the key. If there's voltage, problem is the solenoid or the starter. If no voltage, the problem is the safety switch or ignition switch.

As for bypassing the safety switch, a wiring diagram is handy to ID the wires, but you can go blindly by pulling the center console, finding the multi-pin connector, and running a jumper from one pin to the starter pin.

no wiring diagram, but I think I see the two wires that feed the switch, however if you have a wiring diagram available ,....what are the colors of the wires?...

I just went thru an identical scenario. Click on my username and see recent posts about crank no-start. PIA job but doable.
