Volvo 940 with AW trans to M47 900 1992

I have a 92 940 sedan with an AW71 and the 1041 axle, with locking diff? i have an fairy rusty (mostly in the floors) 88 240 with the dana 30 and an m47 Both non-turbo. Im leaning more toward staying with the 940 and parting out the 240 but the biggest reason i wanna do this is because i want to convert the AW trans to a m47 in my 940..... I found an article on the web by a gentlemen who converted his 780 to an M46? he seems to had to source alot of hydralic clutch parts but my m47 is a cable clutch, and there no serperate overdrive to deal with.....? So I dunno..... I always was thinking instead of seperating it from the engine... just to transplant the entire drivetrain (engine and trans) into the 940 but i dont thing the 240 had the provisions for the RPM sensor... Also the 940 is a Rex/regina..... with the cam driven distributor... the 240 bosch with the side driven distributor..... the 240 is well worn in..... i know some of the parts ill need... transmount, clutch pedal, driveshaft? Really just kinda branstorming if it worth doing.... is this locking diff gonna play havoc? Let me know what you think....

    hello
    I recently just completed swapping a M-47 into my 95 940 turbo.
you can go with the cable clutch but you probably need parts from a 740 as the 240 clutch cable and brackets may not work.
    you need
    740 tranny crossmember/tranny mount.
    740 driveshafts w/associated parts.
    740 pedals
regina flywheel dogdish type. (very very very rare) i actually have one i could sell and
this could be the most difficult item to find.
you can cut/chisel out bellhousing for rpm sensor.
shifter assembly should swap over? dont know never had a 240 stick.
right now i have acess to the driveshaft, crossmember, and cage that holds the shifter assembly and the shifter assembly. not sure if this part is different from 240.
not sure if the tranny mount bracket is different.
your rpms will be higher than the auto tranny.
i could be forgetting something, just ask and i may remember more.
    good luck
    mike

you may not be happy long term having an m47 in a turbo car. this transmission is NOT able to handle heavy torque from the turbo according to this informative site.

      http://people.physics.anu.edu.au/~amh110/Supra/supra_in_volvo_240.htm

WHY GO TO THE TROUBLE OF CHANGING - VOLVO GEARBOX BACKGROUND:

Volvo M46 with Overdrive: The 240/760/740 Volvo turbos use a strong M46 gearbox being a Volvo in-house designed 4 speed, and bolted to it is a UK designed Laycock de Normanville Overdrive gear assembly for 5th. gear. Early M46 transmission cases where cast iron, later cases - Al.Alloy. The gearbox is reportably good for near 220 hp levels with a torque load of 220-295 ft.lb (300-400 Nm). Around 1986, 740/760 turbo models came fitted with a slighty updated M46 'D' box mated to a tougher 'Type P' Overdrive. The 'Type P' could handle more torque than the 'J', the main change being an increase in the M46's output shaft diameter, hence later 'Type P' OD's cannot be retrofitted to the earlier M46's with the 'Type J' OD.

The two-section transmission is fine until the 'complicated' Overdrive section causes trouble, being very expensive to replace, recondition, or repair perfectly. Owners face high cost again when it's time to replace or re-condition the 4 speed main gearbox and this is where I drew the line. The gasket sets alone were sending me broke in the quest to eliminate fine oil leaks from the thin ATF fluid.
I wished for 5 real gears based on a strong design at a reasonable price.

Volvo manufactured a 5 speed M47 (versions I & II ) only fitted to NON turbo models (except 940SE low pressure turbo), and hence for performance driving with a turbo engine, the M47 is just not strong enough, one problem area being the breaking of low friction synchros. The internet has lots of M47 information.

Off topic but could you tell me more about what years and models used the various versions of the M46? From what I have been able to find, the M46 was used from 1975 to 1991 on the 240, 260, 740, 760 including turbos in North America. Don't know about elsewhere. You say around 1986 the P type came out for the 740/760. My notes say the 240 switched to the M47 in 1987. Can I say that from 1987 onwards all M46s were P type and that 1986 and earlier were J type?

The 1986 model year 740T was a split year, early cars had J type OD, and late cars had P type OD. The J type was used in NA 700s through the 1987 model year. 1988+ 700s with manual transmission got the M47.

Laycock came out with the J/P type OD, and it was used in late 1990 740Ts. There is also P/J type. It must be slightly different than the J/P type, and both are improvements over the P type.

        Hello
I have seen the results of many M-47 failures. 3rd & 5th gear shatter.
well i dont plan on any performance driving with this car. making this one for gas mileage.
i never named a car, but i will call this one the green volvo.(although its white)
i believe it should be fine with stock boost levels, time will tell.
just last weekend i swapped in a rear axle from a 93 965 with 3.31 gears.
im hoping for 28-29 mpg. still has plenty of giddyup for a daily driver. soon to go with raised compression for even better mileage.
One other thing is my owning volvos is kinda like a hobby and i like to spend time messing around like this.
when/if she blows i will surely post my results.
for spirited driving i will drive my 945 turbo. 14.4 @ 94mph many mods.
luckily all work done by me.
        thanks
        Mike

One thing that will certainly help is spending the extra money on Redline Manual Synthetic Transmission Fluid. I was resigned to a balky 3rd gear synchro on my 1985 740Turbo with 4 speed and overdrive. after 2 weeks the glitch disappeared never to return. The gearbox worked great. The manual box is alotta fun. It's not quick and notchy but it's still enjoyable. I changed out the turbo to a later Mitsubishi and when I changed the head gasket I took the time to grind smooth the intake and exhaust passage ridges so the flow would be nice and smooth. That block was very zippy and smooth, so willing to rev like no other red block I have had. Took the boost up slightly and enjoyed that great intermediate boost.
Even though the Automatic Aisin is a gem and faster, I had a ball with my stick.
I've done one conversion and it was a success. Volvo sedans with sticks are fun if you don't live in LA with the expressway jam ups.

i recently sold a 93 240 wagon i bought as a project with an m47 and a 3.31 rearend. it got substantially BETTER mileage than my 92 daily 240 wagon with an aw70.

my fun ride is 1990 760 turbo wagon 108k miles. suspension mods, rebuilt the mitsubishi td04. fast and fun even with an aw71.
