Hi Ted,
I'm sure you had some trouble flushing the heater core. I've never gone so far as to disconnect heater hoses and force it through for just a routine coolant change, but simply filled with tap water after draining via block drain and lower rad hose before bringing the motor to the temp where the tstat opens. Taking it on a cruise would help, because the coolant pumps vary quite a bit on efficiency at idle. Surely you've seen my side-by-side comparison of vane depth.
Then you should see the leftover in the drained liquid. After that, I simply add a gallon of whatever is cheapest (Prestone or Zerex usually) and top off with 59-cent distilled water. A couple run cycles and the color returns to the rez.
By the way, your reference to gel from mixing orange and green sounds almost word for word like the internet rumor. I can't authoritatively discount it as mythology, but can point to opposing opinions and include my own anecdote which tends to refute the "gel" theory. Either way, it doesn't hurt anyone to observe the dire warning.
