83 242 turbo air fuel mixture 200

Purchased a 240 turbo 83". Car had modified exhaust and no oxygen sensor. Is there a simple economical way to measure the air fuel ratio without the sensor? The car seems rich and lean at different times. Would like to be able to adjust.

Your best bet it to install an oxygen sensor. The unheated turbo sensors are less than twenty bucks. Are you sure it's not still there? On the Kjet turbos the sensor is on the exaust manifold in front of the turbo charger. Its hard to see if you don't know where to look for it. Otherwise it would not cost that much to have a bung welded onto the downpipe for a sensor.

Without an O2 sensor the lamda sond unit will defalt to a preset mixture that errs on the rich side, and you will get poor fuel economy.
