No Crank! Starter dead? 700

Hi All
This am I have new probelm with the beast. No Crank. I Left overhead light on, doesnt dim at all. Unfortunatley no starter service socket at all(has no schraeder on rail either). Tried running a ground from battery to starter but no crank(this step I had to half ass with a piece of 12guage bx cause wife has the jumper cables). To test nuetral safety switch, you can hear solenoid click when trying to start in Park and Nuetral but NO solenoid clicking when trying to start in R, 1,2,or D. Tried whackig the starter with heavy wrench...nada. Anything else I need to test before replacing the starter?
Matt

Not sure why you are running a ground with #12 wire?
If the starter solonoid clicks with no dimming of lights the starter is not drawing current and would be likely be bad. There is a possiblity that you have a corroded plus wire (the big thick one) from battery to starter. If the ground wire were bad the lights would dim.

IMHO a gentle bumb with a hammer to try and get a worn brush to make contact with the armature to start it spinning will not hurt.

Sorry dude, I had another post bemoaning the removal and replacement of said starter so I never got back around to posting the conclusion to this one. Replaced it and it does appear the starter was dead(per Auto Zone old one was bad). This vehicle is a regina with the crappy cold start injector so in temps below freezing it tends to take a long crank session on occasion to get her started. So it does not surprise me the original starter lasted "only" 158,000 miles. I still need to perform the TSB re: wiring directly to the starter as opposed to volatge from the RSR, as I noticed it has not been done while installing the starter. Matt

Yeah, it could just be a bad battery or corroded battery cable contacts. Also check ground cable at both ends.

Dont be a caveman with your starter , you can knock the field magnets loose.

Put a charger on your battery and forget trying to jump with #12 wire.

See what happens with real jumper cables and a good battery and post back.

I hate it when people forward bogus warnings...but this one is real, and it's important.

So please send this warning to everyone on your e-mail list:

If someone comes to your front door saying they are conducting a survey on deer ticks and asks you to take your clothes off and dance around with your arms up, DO NOT DO IT!!

IT IS A SCAM; they only want to see you naked.

I wish I'd gotten this yesterday. I feel so stupid now....

Hi Art,

Happy new year from icy Boston.
My local starter/alternator guru warned me not to smack the starter since there's magnets cemented inside the outer shell, and they can get dislodged

Maybe they're called something else, but the basic idea is to avoid beating
on your starter.

Bill

Hi Bill,

Greetings from balmy Baltimore! Huh, even Tampa is cold now.

I was wondering if there was more to 700's than I knew vicariously, so I thought I'd raise the question. My recollection was field windings in the Bosch starters used in my 240's, thinking only little Hondas and Toyotas had PM starters. So, I decided to pull the armature out of one of the smaller, gear reduction Bosch units used in the later cars, and sure enough, six permanent magnets for the field. You're absolutely right -- and I'd just given someone advice to go at his solenoid with a ball bat! How about that. If I hang around here I learn something every day. I would agree - don't beat your starter. Don't drop it. Don't drop any PM motor, including wiper motors and main fuel pumps.

Don't forget (rough rule of thumb) that US dictionaries are at the prescriptive end of a spectrum, British ones at the descriptive end, and Australian ones somewhat nearer the British than the US end - and none of these are focussing on the same dialect anyway. It means there's a risk of a descriptive error in saying "dictionaries are this much prescriptive", because you may make an accurate description of one particular lot of dictionaries that is not true in general. Whack 'em all I say! 700

Hi Art,

I don't want to go up unto the garage attic to look at the one starter I have left. So this is based on greenbook TP 31465/1, which covers 4 starters:

1 - Bosch 0 001 311
2 - Bosch 0 001 362
3 - Bosch 0 001 108
4 - Hitachi S 114-232, Hitachi S 13-91

From the pictures, I'd say it's safe to whack away at 1, 2, and 4, as they all have their field magnet shoes held in place with 1 large screw each. [Manual advises that an impact screwdriver might be needed to remove.]

The Bosch 0 001 108 shows it's (6) permanent magnets simply being slid out of locating "slots" to remove (Step L17). No mention of glue to contend with—it just says slide out to remove. The picture looks like they may be held to the starter body magnetically, and retained in place by some kind of fixture that allows only forward movement for removal. I'd probably whack this one too.
[Hardwood only of course.]

Maybe Bill's guru was thinking of wiper motors?

Happy New Year Bruce from Frostytown,USA

My Guru is one of the partners of S&J rebuilders , Lynn , Mass.
A pair of local fireman that operate that generator/alternator/starter shop.
Where they give you alternator brushes for free and you get replacement
brush sets for $10. You wonder why the prices are so high elsewhere.

I bought a spare starter motor at the local boneyard for $20 and brought it
down to him, He warned me to never hit the starter since those magnets are
brittle and can, and do break loose. I had it apart to check the brushes etc,
and he pronounced that it looked great and put it back together for a spare.

This guy is terrific, I sometimes leave a bottle of Metaxa or a sixpack depending
on the weather and what favors he conjures.

Cheers, Bill

It was a 108 I looked at. Interesting about the green book. Mine is too old to show anything but one starter, using field coils held to the side with the familiar fat flat-head screws.

As told by G.Downs III:

After years of hiding the fact that the love is gone, the last child moved out of the house and Mom and Dad announced they are getting a divorce.

The kids are distraught and hired a marriage counselor as a last resort at keeping the parents together.

The counselor works for hours, tries all of his methods, but the couple still won't even talk to each other.

Finally, the counselor goes over to a closet, brings out a beautiful upright Bass, and begins to play.

After a few moments, the couple starts talking.

They discover that they're not actually that far apart and decide to give their marriage another try.

The kids are amazed and ask the counselor how he managed to do it.

He replies, "I've never seen anyone who wouldn't talk during a bass solo."

And for that, the counselor gets $200/hr, and doesn't have to join the musicians' union....
