Low Oil; camshaft seized. Opinions on hopes for salvaging? 900 1995

My daughter's car ran low of oil and the camshaft seized causing the camshaft sprocket/bolt to break off.

I have removed the camshaft cover to see what is going on and at this point I don't see anything. Someone has recommended removing the camshaft next.

What hopes do I have have that this is salvageable? Is it time for her to just look for another car?

You stated in the other thread (best to keep only one thread for one problem) that the pulley was separated from the cam. Either the bolt came out or the camshaft sheared. Looking at the front of the shaft under the plastic timing belt cover should reveal exactly what has happened. If it sheared it most likely separated under the journal bearing cap. You would also see the bolt still threaded into the stub of the cam shaft.

As stated by others, installing a replacement camsaft is not a huge job if the bearing surface is not badly damaged. If you have the valve cover off your are halfway there. Note that along with installing the cam you should also change the timing belt and seals. Timing the new belt is actually a little more involved than slapping in a new cam.

There is much information in the 700/900 FAQ sections on the subject.

I don't think its a big deal if it is only the cam. It can be polished up in the journals, refitted with the key. Someone will have the details for you, but there are a lot worse jobs.
