M47 Output Flange Removal 200 1988

The rear transmission seal on my '88 245 with the M47 is leaking. I need to remove the flange in order to replace the seal. Any recommendations for obtaining the special counterhold tool? I might try using a piece of a heavy steel bracket bolted to two holes if possible. I am hesitant to to use an impact wrench for this purpose, although I think I should be O.K. with the transmission in neutral.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I thinks, that if my transmission can't take a little rataaat tat tat of an impact driver. I wouldn't want to drive it around in the real bump de bump world out there. Just don't use it to put it back on with a full dose of bam!

No clues for seals. Haven't been there and done that!

That flange isn't that tight. I did use an Impact on mine. The torque was set Low and it came right off.
I may have put a big Cresent Wrench on the flange to hold it.

Look above that seal and see if it's leaking from the little seal around the Shifter arm.

Thanks for the information, I do believe that I also need to replace the selector shaft seal in addition to the output seal. FCP has aftermarket seals listed, however I question the quality. Any suggestions for a source for these?

I used Grotons for this . It hasn't been long enough to report good/bad.

That seal in not in the rear cover. You have to remove te cover to get to it it's sits in the rear of the trani housing.
You will want two Mechanics Picks to poke it and manipulate it up and out.

I've always used impact guns and no holder and the tranny in neutral. Never had a problem...
