what type of refrigerant does 1991 240 wagon use 200 1991

I'm looking at buying another wagon. What type of refrigerant does this car use, if it needs to be switched to the newer type is this expensive? Any estimate on what it should run? We only own older 240's a '85 and '87. I have not had them converted.

For original Volvos, new refridgerant started in 1993 .... 200 1991

If your car wasn't converted by a previous owner, your '91 uses the old (and very expensive) R-12. Factory use of R134a began in 1993.

The converted cars are easy to see, if not by warning labels then by the changed fittings -- i.e., by law (I believe), the connectors for the hoses have to be different to help avoid mixups.

Also, as an alternative to converting to R134a, there are various R12 replacements available. Here's merely the first hit in a google search: http://www.freeze12.com/
