Hi,

I've been trying to get my speedometer to work for years now and I think I've found the problem but don't know how to fix it. The dash speedo works, the speedo cable is just fine, and the speedometer gear that goes into the transmission is just fine. But, the gear turns freely instead of being locked into place by the driving/worm gear inside the transmission (an M41). I pulled the transmission (for some other reason) and I noticed that the worm gear was shifted back (toward the driveshaft). I think there is supposed to be a spacer that fixes the worm gear into place - maybe that has gone somewhere?? I've put the transmission back into the car (cause - well - its my only way to get around) and don't want to pull it again, but I am wondering if anyone has had this problem or might have an idea how to fix it.

Hello,

Do you have a D or J type overdrive?

The D has the solenoid mounted on the right hand side and J is mounted on the left hand side of the overdrive.

I have a D overdrive. So, the entry point for the speedo cable and gear is on the same side as the solenoid.

For a different reason I switched transmissions in my P1800 and 122. This is how I know that the problem lies in the transmission, not any of the other components.

Hello,

Someone probably left out the thin spacer ring that goes on after the speedometer flange and thick spacer on the output shaft of the overdrive.

Without that thin spacer, the speedometer flange will spin freely and not turn the speedometer drive gear and therefore will not turn the cable.

If the thin spacer is missing, you will have to remove the overdrive and disassemble to properly repair.

The J overdrive does not use a spacer in this area and someone may have confused the 2 and assumed there was no spacer needed.

BTW, there are almost no interchangeable parts between the a D and a J overdrive.
