Deves piston rings 120-130

Hi has anyone assembled an engine using Deves rings,Im putting my b20 together and the oil rings seem really dificult to compress with my normal ring compressor, just wondering if that is normal, also wonder about increased drag and wear on the cylinder wall. I've used this same compressor on lots of other ring sets and never found them that hard to compress Im afraid they might pop out and rollup, Thanks ,Mike

I've used them and don't like them. The top ring is too soft. Second ring has that weird expander behind it. Don't worry too much pressure on the cylinder wall, they loose their tension real quick. They do, however, seal up OK with worn out pistons and bores, for a little while.

For cheap rings I prefer Hastings iron top ring set. For good rings I use Total Seal (not gap-less)or a Hastings set and replace the top ring of the set with a Moly top ring file fit to size.

That sounds like a good option, I like the total seal rings and Ive usually used the Moly rings on a rebore and hone , just did a ball hone on these but they look good, where do you get the total seals and molys for the b20 mine is just std. 3.502 Thanks, Mike

Well, used pistons and worn bores is what Deves do best. Check the top ring grove for excessive side clearance. Usually the grove wears in a tapered manner. Also check real carefully for ANY ridge at the top of the bore just above the top ring as it can break the new rings.

If the bores and pistons are really that good, a Hastings plane iron ring set may be more durable. Don't use an expensive hard top ring like Total Seal with used pistons and bores.

I have a factory "re-ring" set here for std bore if you can use them. The top ring has a step in the face to keep it below the wear ridge. PM me and I'll make you a deal!

Hi top ring side clearance is .0015 virtually no ridge, I might mention this is a b18 bored to b20 std, long before I got it but neverthe less bore seems decent as where the the pistons , no taper and approx. .003 piston to wall, yes I would be interested in that set if ths doesnt work out Thanks

Are you re-using the pistons? If so, is all the carbon out of the grooves? Did you check ring depth into the groove before installing the rings on the pistons?
