Very loud engine knock at startup 200 1992

LH 3.1 92 245 that has been sitting in the unheated garage for the past two weeks, engine just turned 50K miles since full rebuild.

When I started the car this morning it was 20F outside and for the first few seconds the engine knocked very loudly. I haven't heard knocking that loud since I had the distributor way too far advanced on a Ford 390. Oil and fuel pressure are all within the norm for a cold start. The knock went away within 2 to 3 seconds and it ran fine afterwards.

Just curious if anyone else has run into this situation. Note this is the coldest weather this engine has been run in since it was rebuilt and I can assure you that it wasn't piston slap (have heard that on other B230F engines before.

Thanks in advance!

I'll be you have an oil filter that has a bad check valve in it, and after all the oil drained back in the pan, it took those few seconds to build oil pressure back up. Whose brand of filter? Hastings used to known for that. I've had that experience.

I'm using Mann filters so if that is it, I will be really surprised. But stranger things have happened!

I'm just learning about computer controlled engine ignition. (Am used to carburetors).

Does the computer have to reconfigure after it has been disconnected (ie. no battery)? If so, the knock could be the computer finding the ignition range.

    Jorrell,

Could it be a defective oil filter, bad check valve? Did the oil light linger?

    Just curious, what weight oil?

I'm guessing excessive bearing clearance, probably a main bearing. You stated that you had done a full rebuild, did you have the crank turned? What were your bearing clearances?Later model B230's have really tight clearances on the rod and main bearings.
A lot of engines will have a slight rattle on start up if they have been sitting for a extended period of time.

Dan, when I heard the noise the first thing that came to mind was detonation, the second was rod bearings. I went back and checked my build notes on the rod and main bearings. The rod bearing clearances when installed at 72F was in the range of 0.0012" to 0.0015", the main bearings were in the range of 0.0010" to 0.0016", so if anything on the tighter end of the scale. That being said, my notes do not include the bearing manufacturer's name (an oversight on my part) so it is possible there is a degradation in their babbitt coating. Since break-in the engine has run on Castrol Syntec 5W30 and Mann filters.

If the problem persists and I can't measure a timing error during the event, I may pull the pan and recheck the bottom end clearances... if they are off then it is time for a V8!

You could also drain the oil, see what kinda schmutz ( <- technical term ) is on the drain plug and cut the oil filter apart to check for the same. If they're clean, it suggests the backflow valve in the filter failure rather than babbit delamination.

Jorrell, with those clearances it doesn't appear you have a problem with the lower end, could be a timing knock.I've seen the Babbitt peel on new bearings, this may be an issue with one or more of the bearings...I can't remember the brand.

Run it till something breaks then do a v8 swap :)

        I done a V8 swap about two years ago in my wife's 245.Swapped in a LT1 and 4l60e trans out of a 94 Vette,runs really good :)300 hp and about 24 mpg.
I'm currently doing a LS1 swap in a 242,been working on it on and off for about six months.

          Dan,

I am certain that all four cylinders were contributors to that gosh awful symphony so if it is babbitt failure, it is systemic. As far as a V8 conversion, if I do it, the donor will be a 5.0L GT... being parted at a friend's house.

How about grounding the coil wire and cranking the engine over until the oil pressure has a chance to build? Reinstall the coil wire and see if you still hear the noise at start up.

I think I would want to determine if it is in fact rod noise.

Exhaust system knocking against something? The sound is a very noticeable and fairly deep-pitched knock.

I've had it happen. A hanger lost or possibly an engine/tranny mount worn, and at the very low rpms of startup the vibration resonance is just so that it hits something. Once it happened right after getting some exhaust work done - the guy hadn't made certain the pipe was hanging properly away from other metal.

Just trying to be helpful here, and I would look to YOU for knowledge, you know... :-)

What KIND of noise was it? Metal, heavy metal, knocking metal, light metal... or (I hope) could be, e.g. stiff plastic whacking?

Meaning, yeah, immediate fear of engine knocks arises.
BUT I had an aging 745 that whacked when the engine mounts aged and sagged, and the radiator fan whacked the fan shroud! Was new to me, the newbie, but immediately obvious to the local import repair shop.

I mean, rubbers and plastics poop out in the cold, so look for cheap and easy stuff, too. :-)
