plug condition - opinions? 200

Son o' Gutz had a little bit of a rough idle and was taking a few more cranks than usual to fire up in the morning. Checked my records and found I hadn't put in new plugs for just over 30K miles, so a fresh set of NGKs were put in.

If I did this right, there should be a link below which brings you to a pic of the plugs. To my eye, they look a little too pale; and I've been getting some pinging since the summer, even when running 92 octane. I'm thinking it's running a bit on the lean side. Comments?

(and for the sharp-eyed observers, yes, that's a stock from a 91/30 Mosin-Nagant in the background... another project in process)

Those plugs look pretty normal to me. If electrodes not worn to much you could probably put em back in.

Ping is controlled by the ECU control of timing. Have you checked the Knock sensor?

I had the same thing 2-3 years ago. Plugs were at least as clean. I assumed 1) head gasket leak - steam cleaning; 2) lean condition.

Ruled out (1) as it wouldn't typically do all 4. The exhaust pipe was good, the car never pinged or ran warm.

Then I had it again on another one. And a friend the same thing.

So I infer that some cars run a little lean and it's fine and/ or 240s run on the lean side anyway - perhaps running rich when there's a problem in that direction.

Use the Bosch Platinums - 4016 or 4216. No re-gapping and well over 50k life.

Bosch Platinum plugs have a tendency to foul quickly and also have their center electrodes break in cold weather in a B230F. Fuel economy also suffered a bit as well

Never had a single problem with the platinums. I've used them for at least 10-15 years on all my bricks. I would never go back to anything else.

Hmmmm... tried them a while back, didn't work so well in my 240s. The 850 liked 'em though.

Actually, though, I'm looking for opinions on the color as an indicator of what's going on combustion-wise.

That is pretty much what I see when replacing plugs on my 240's at 30 k miles of use. The gap has widened from 28 to 32 or so. They could probably be re-gaped but I usually just replace them.
