Changing out Dead bulb in Auto Shift 200 1991

Anyone have a easy way to change out the bulb, or am I just being really dense today.

Auto shifter lamp 200 1991

No easy way. It is a fiddly challenge, especially if it is cold. State inspection requires this lamp to work.

Try this. Wait until you've taken a trip and all is warm inside, including your fingers and the wiring. In daylight, set the parking brake, but leave the shifter in drive, 2, or 1 and turn off the engine and lights. Remove the shifter cover screws (2) and push it back out of the way as far as you can.

With two long, skinny index fingers (or popsicle stick equivalents), push the brown plastic lamp socket downward, out of the metal shield. Don't try to remove the screw holding the shield to the shifter.

Getting it back into the shield is the fiddly challenge, so now you are glad you have skinny index fingers instead of popsicle sticks, and you are thanking me to suggest doing this when it is warm and the wires are supple. Finally, be sure the motion of the shift lever does not pull or pinch the lamp wires.
