Steering gearbox leak - 1981 Camgear rack 200

81 242 Camgear rack.

I noticed today that my car is losing power steering fluid. The fluid appears to be leaking from the pinion shaft seal at the top of the steering gearbox, immediately below the steering shaft universal joint. How difficult is the fix for this?

    Doesn't that rack have a cover plate bolted on over the shaft entry?

        Many years ago I had one of those leaking CAM rack pinion shaft seals. As I recall, the seal is not replaceable by itself. You have to replace the combined cover-seal assembly.

        I never did replace it, but recall the OE price (or maybe IPD?) was around $95. I just found an an old catalog listing where a "top cover seal" is PN 1272467.

        When I put that PN in Tasca's "Search by OEM Part Number", it shows a "cover" for $52.77 (list $70.60).

        But I'm not 100& sure if that's a CAM rack part — because I don't know if the ZF rack has a similar cover where the pinion shaft sticks out or not.
